EY upgrade J to F

Hi guys,

I'm eyeing a cheap J fare MEL-MLE return which is just over A$3k per person on EY and coming back on a mixture of UL and EY.
Both ways we are on EY metal for the long MEL-AUH and AUH-MEL flight.

As paid F for this route is something ridiculous, like A$12k per person, I wonder how much it would cost for me to upgrade to F at check-in or earlier ?
Do EY still have those upgrade auctions ?

How much should I expect to pay per person per way ? Something like A$1.5k maybe ?
A$6k for F return is pretty acceptable I think.

I've flown EY heaps but never in J (usually F award via AA) so wondering how the upgrade process works ? Do I wait for them to email me ? What's the procedure ? How long before the flight do I find out ? Do all flights with J offer an upgrade auction ? Are J to F upgrades easier to win than Y to J ?

If my flight does not offer an upgrade auction, is there any other way to still upgrade for cash at check-in ? How much can I expect this to cost me ? The full fare difference or much less ?

Last December, exactly a week out from my Syd-Auh flight, I received an email iinviting me to bid for an upgrade from paid J---> F for both the outbound and inbound flights. The mininum bid was $1385...I bid $1390 for each leg, and was successful both times. They were 2 good flights

Were you in the lowest class of paid J ?
For me I just realised that it would cost a grand more (for the two of us) to buy the next level of J which were upgradeable and included chauffeur drive.

$1390 is a good price and certainly a goer.

The Z fare rules are not upgradeable so you won't receive any email to upgrade. Whether it is possible at the airport, not sure but guessing not.
