Etihad Airways, one of the world's fastest-growing airlines, is expected to fly into Perth from February, according to sources in Abu Dhabi.
The new service, expected to be a joint venture with Virgin Australia, will open up a range of new travel options.
The Abu Dhabi-based airline will operate a daily 262-seat Airbus A330 with connections to 16 destinations in Europe and three in the US.
The Etihad service will arrive at Perth International Airport at 1.40pm and depart at 3.50pm.
With the additional service from the Middle East, Perth will now be served by the world's three fastest-growing airlines - Emirates, Qatar and Etihad.
Emirates, which started services to Perth in 2002, now has three flight times a day, and Qatar, which launched flights last year, operates a daily service.

Another big airline heads for Perth - The West Australian

Just as EK is expected to upgauge 1 daily with A380...competition is rife - no wonder QF got out!

The really interesting bit will be whether it's a "colluding-on-pricing" joint venture, or a shared metal joint venture. Most likely the former though.

Given it mentions EY A330 configs I suspect its codeshares.

Yes, for "joint venture" I read it as "codeshare".

What would have been more exciting would be VA metal PER-AUH (say 3/week and EY 4/week) - that would be more of a "joint venture".

You might be closer to the money than you think Doc ;)

How many A330's VA got left on order?? Anyone know?

VA better be building its own & first ever Australian international lounge at PER T1 methinks!

Interesting info!

With the delivery of -XFH last week I think that is it, with a fleet of 7.

-XFH hasn't taken on a revenue service yet though.

Etihad coming to Perth - hooray!

Great news for Velocity members here in Perth:

Combined with Air NZ's announcement of direct Chch to Perth services, this opens up some interesting possibilities for us South Islanders.

Re: Etihad coming to Perth - hooray!

Living in Perth those 30,000 velocity points i should be getting from Foxtel should go further now than if i had had to go over to one of the east coast cities... Wonder what the points required to get to AUH and to Europe will be??

Re: Etihad coming to Perth - hooray!

It really does make sense for Perth to be the major entry point into Australia for the Gulf carriers. It is the closest major port with decent connections to most other states. Best of all, no stupid curfews!

Re: Etihad coming to Perth - hooray!

The absence of a curfew is good news for me. I am sick of having to work around the situation at Sydney when heading home. It will perhaps also be an improvement with regard to the rather strange transit security screening we have to endure at Sydney too. (Although I admit, it does happen at some other airports.)

Well it arrives in to PER at 1340 and the last VA flight to SYD is scheduled about 1500...I don't know what the MCT at PER is but that would so easily be a misconnect with just one problem like the bus taking a few minutes longer or a longer queue at immigration...

Re: Etihad coming to Perth - hooray!

I guess it roughly amounts to the same situation as currently even if they can land in Perth with no curfew, as passengers would then need to get on to flights to Sydney etc which may then be affected just the same by the curfew (I'm assuming the curfews apply to all planes and not just INT arrivals)

If passengers were to land in PER for a bit and then fly on later to some of the other Oz captials then the lounge/transitting situation at PER INT and INT/DOM would have to improve significantly!!

It should work well from next year, no bus etc, as VA will be flying domestic out of their new pier at T1, and VARA through T2. Everything will be on that side of the airport, which will be great!

Re: Etihad coming to Perth - hooray!

I wonder if QF will run its INTL departures out of the western side?

No they won't. I cant see them putting a customs checkpoint etc in place for their ONE flight a day. Even Virgin has more international capacity out of Perth than Qantas.

But you can pump in your EK and SA flights through there aswell...potentially your CX flights but who knows how long that's goin to last...
