I have just booked our flights from London to Melbourne on 22nd February and because my partner has arthritis in his knees needs to be able to stretch out so I paid the extra and booked exit row seats outbound QF10 35j & K and home QF9 35 E & F. I now think I may have made a huge mistake as I am only 5ft tall and have read on seat guru that there is no swing out footrest. I can,t bear the thought of 23 hours of dangling legs. Does anyone know if Qantas would allow me to rest my legs on a blow up cushion or similar. Thanks in advance for any help.

Firstly welcome aboard Debstuart.

Re your seat dilemma, you shouldn't have an issue placing something in front of you after take off and make sure you remove it before landing. You might get other pax congregating in the are because of the free space who may bump your cushion.

Finally, is partner fit enough to assist in an emergency? If not they may be moved to another seat. It is the call of the airline staff so it may not be dealt with until you're on the plane.

Thanks for the quick reply and yes he is definitely fit enough his knees just seize up if he gets stuck in one position for too long and the option to be able to change position and stretch them out should solve his problem. Thank yoy

As Hvr points out, don't mentioned you got the exit row because of bad legs that lock up. Your partner can do the job then that's great, don't create uncertainty in the eyes of the crew.

Yep, a bag under your feet should work fine.

I find a standard sized rolla-board cabin bag does the trick! Almost perfectly level with the seat and allows your legs to go horizontal for a good rest.

As others have said, QF should not have a problem with this, but I would exercise some discretion about your timing.

Try to put a blow-up cushion or bag into the exit space during meal service, or immediately after while people are queuing to use the WCs and you might be asked to stow the bag (or not put it there at all).

Put the bag/cushion down once the cabin has quietened down, or the lights are dimmed, and no one is going to say anything.

While there isn't a prohibition (that I'm aware of) about having items in an exit space during flight, if a cabin crew member was to ask you to remove it you would need to comply (as it could be safety related). Doing it when they're not going to notice (or care) solves any issues.

Just make sure that the bag does not push against the seat in front of you. A couple of years ago, CDG>SIN, after about 10hrs there was a very loud meltdown/flight rage at a very annoying pax that was pushing their foot rest/bag against the seat in front of her.

They're in an exit row, which typically means no seat in front of you (on A380's).

Be aware that once I was asked to remove a bag I had on the floor in front of me due to it being an "exit area". Many times before and a few times since I have seen no enforcement of such a rule.

Those enforcements generally happen as one off by crew having a bad day. I was asked to return to my seat on an Ansett flight before takeoff. I think it was her second week on the job and the practical realities of the times hadn't set in at that point.

Hope your right. I have found inflatable footrests on EBAY which look perfect for the job so will invest in one of those.

There is a "netted footrest" on the 380 in Y, fwiw. No idea what that actually means :)

I think that's what they have on BA flights: a set bag that you can put your feet in. Better than nothing, but not as good as perfectly-sized hand luggage. I have a roller-bag that will *just* fit under the seat in front on larger planes, and it makes a great footrest.

Thanks for all your helpful replies. I have actually contacted Qantas and asked them. Their answer was as suggested that they can,t see a problem during time in the air just that the area must be clear during take off and landing but he also suggested asking the FA. I think that's the polite thing to do rather than presume it's okay. Just hope I get a nice one!

I would absolutely recommend against asking the FA. If you ask at the wrong time you may get the answer that no obstructions are allowed. And once you have that answer, that's it for the rest of the flight.

It is well established from the collective wisdom (and experience) of those on these boards that placing a bag is absolutely fine, especially if you avoid doing it during a 'busy' period when that space is being used.

I was thinking after food service as they wont be in the FA's way. Not too worried about the first leg as just 6 hours to Dubai it's the 13 hours from Dubai to Melbourne I would like to put my feet up and sleep. I think I need to test the FA's in our area out first before asking.

I know with bulkhead seats I am able to rest my heels against the frame of the seat (almost like a footrest underneath the seat ) and it seems to do the trick for me.

If I remember correctly this should be possible in exit row as well?
