I am wondering if anyone might be able to steer me in the right direction or simply point out that what I have heard is a myth. I recall hearing that when you are flying one way and or relocating to a new country that you get extra baggage allowance? I am flying QF and flying one way and could do with the extra baggage allowance if that is available for one way travellers. Does anyone know if this is true or is this simply an urban myth that I have conjured to console myself?

If it is any help I am a citizen relocating back to Aus on a perm basis? But I just have an ordinary fare.

AFAIK only get the baggage allowance for your travel class, plus a additional allowance for Qantas Club, or Silver(?),Gold,Platinum Frequent Flyers.

Sorry, it's a myth.

Flying one-way definitely doesn't afford you any extra baggage allowance. Being overweight and stating to the check-in agent that you're moving countries might garner you some sympathy but you can't rely on them being able to take pity on you to waive paying for excess, especially if the amount of baggage well and truly exceeds your allowance.

The problem of moving countries was recently tackled by another member of the forum who did the same thing. In his case, it was a matter of choosing the routing back home which had both a cheap fare and lowest cost for paying for excess baggage (e.g. since it was from the UK, it was cheaper to pay for excess baggage with BA and fly to America, then use the piece system with the Americas to go home).

It is not a myth, unless it has recently been stopped, there is a special allowance for those emigrating to Australia. For those travelling on Qantas on the flight in which their permanent residency is being activated are able to get an additional baggage allowance. As part of the pack given when a PR visa is granted, details of the additional allowance is provided

In your case of just returning home, then there is no special benefits provided

Both special fares and baggage allowances are available on a variety of airlines including SQ from Europe but you need to organize it and validate if you qualify by contacting the IOM as its not available openly:

IOM Australia - Projects

Concessional Fares for Immigrants Travelling to Australia and New Zealand

"Every approved immigrant (under the categories Skilled Migrration, Business Skills and Parent Migration) is eligible for a special reduced one-way economy fare and more generous baggage allowance from IOM. This has been the result of negotiations with a large number of international carriers on specifically designated routes. Fare reductions are available from most international carriers from any destinations and for this special service, IOM will charge a reasonable service fee.

Once payment has been received, IOM Canberra will organise your flights according to your preferred date of travel. Depending on your departure city your airtickets will either be made available to you locally at the airline town office or couriered to you.

If you are interested in receiving more information on IOM concessional fares, baggage allowance and eligibily criteria, please do not hesitate to contact us or send us your details."

I doubt you would qualify as per Dave's post, as you are returning, but contact them and see how you go!

Hmmm...I was unaware of that. Apologies to the OP, although as Dave stated, the circumstances appear to be quite specific.

Many thanks all. I thought I would give it a try. Oh well, lets see if I can squeeze it all in again!

Chipping in late, but with some anecdotal evidence...

When I relocated from the UK to Australia in 2005, I told the SQ check-in staff that I was relocating and they didn't charge me any excess baggage, although I had to argue this point harder in Singapore to get them to accept it on the 2nd leg after my stopover.

When I relocated from Australia to China last year, I flew QF and was well over the combined limit for my partner (QF gold) and me (WP) and they ended up charging me $700, which fortunately my company paid. They wouldn't give me any concession based on moving countries.
