Is this a common occurrence?

Expertflyer generally shows availability for tickets issued in NA, its possible what your seeing is not available locally.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Oh ok thanks for the explanation, much appreciated. The qf person just said ef may be wrong because she can't see it.

You could try calling Qantas in the USA on +1800 227 4500 during USA business hours (outside their business hours it could divert back to Australia) and ask them if they see the availability.

Thanks for your input guys, as it pans out, the 2 seats i was after, which was visible on EF, but not on QF online or 131211, became visible online several hours later. I am looking at as far out as possible. Therefore the logical conclusion would be that EF reveals availability before QF staff, although that seems counter intuitive as EF receives information from QF? Furthermore, one could seen 15/5 X availability but it is only 14/5 at qantas.

On the other hand, is the seat map accurate? I would assume so. However, looking at the seat map, there are no passengers. Looking at award availability, there are no availability, even several days back from the 353 mark. Therefore, completely empty cabin, but no award seats. The caveat I suppose is that there never was an award seat. Regarding seat assignment, I believe if one books a jasa or classic, even if the person booking did not manually assign a seat, there should be one assigned automatically correct?

Anyway, just my initial experience with EF. I am a newbie there so probably not doing things completely correctly.

Overall I have found the info from EF very reliable but have had some issues with availability. One burnt me recently. QF129 ADL-PVG showed I3 avail for June 2. I planned my trip around that but when I went to book Qantas said no I and no other online booking site was offering fairs consistent with I bucket. two days later EF showed I0. Major bummer - ended up buying a Y ticket. Now QF operator quoted me $6500 for that. I then asked if I could book it in YFFCN or YFFHK - she paused and said - OK, thats $1800+taxes. So no explanation for this issue - could be regional but as others have said this would be unusual for QF.

Not unusual at all.

Some years I was booking a DONE4 ex CMB some eight months out and needed D class between MEL and LAX. E/F was showing at as available on my desired QF93, indeed I could book it for ex Oz but not ex CMB.

I needed ex CMB as the fare was over $4000 less the ex Oz.

... ended up routing MEL-xSYD-LAX ...

Some year ago, E/F introduced the ability to optionally look at available for UK bookings wich often can be observed to provide different results when compared to USA.

I mainly fly EK internationally, and EF is absolutely brilliant with them - have never had anything less than 100% accuracy in real time, and as soon as I get a seat availability alert from them I've been able to book the seat on the EK website.
