Was recently booking flights MXP-HE-RVN rtn on AY site.

Just before paying, I checked expedia just to see if there were any other airlines serving the route. There was nothing really more direct, but noticed that the same flights on expedia.com.au (the Australian site) was over AUD60 cheaper than the AY fare - EUR432 (AUD623) versus AUD556. Also, expedia were showing 3 seats available at this price, compared to 2 seats on the AY website. I thought that was a bit strange, as I always assume the airlines own website will be cheapest, but I guess they expedia have their own allocation of seats?

Anyway, I go to ticket the fare on expedia.com.au, and just before paying, up comes this:

This airline charges an additional fee for paying with certain
card types.

Being:

  • AmericanExpress: AU$25.00
  • Visa: AU$25.00
  • MasterCard: AU$25.00
  • DinersClub: AU$25.00

Funny, I thought that if AY had a c/c fee, it would be in Euro, as this was a European airline, and all the flights were within Europe. And that such a fee would be unlikely to convert exactly to AUD25.00. I thought that was a bit strange.

So I go back to AY site, and get to the payment page, and it doesn't show any additional c/c charges. In the fare breakdown, there is a EUR5.00 service fee in there, but it was already included in the ticket price that showed up on the flight selection page.

I ended up buying the ticket on expedia.com (the US site) , as it was showing the same flights as USD496 (AUD532), so AUD30 cheaper than the Australian site (due to exchange rate margins, I assume), and there was no credit card fee....

How is it that the expedia.com.au can charge a $25 c/c fee, and then blame it on the airline, when expedia.com don't charge the same fee, and it doesn't seem that AY charge it on their website either?

Very simple, .com.au means Australia is the host of the transaction and such a fee is allowed under that jurisdiction, when you book with Expedia you more often than not get billed by the local airline office in that country, so blaming it on the airline is not only plausible but very possible.

airline sites will not always be the cheapest... some agencies, including on-line, will have discounted fares, or offer the same fare as the airline but reduce their commission slightly to get more sales.

but unless the price difference is significant... I often find more choice and better terms and conditions on the airline's site.
