Excess Baggage

I'm connecting from QF9 to BA1306 in business class. (Booking class D. Single ticket) My luggage allowance is showing as 52kg on QF, due to my Qantas Club membership, but only 40kg on the BA flight. I have a return flight on BA1309 connecting to QF2 with the same baggage allowances. My guess is that they wouldn't pick up on excess baggage on the outbound leg as normal business class allowance is 2 x 32kg, and I don't know if they weigh individual bags in transit anyway. But assuming they do, or assuming that they pick up on the return journey where a computer would be telling them I'm entitled to 40kg, how much is excess baggage? The BA website tells me to look at MMB, but my booking is with Qantas.

According to this, you’ll have 2x 32 kg (max) pieces on MAN-LHR. Plus carry-on. Extra bags £80(!).
As @WeeGraeme is connecting to QF2, the allowance for the segment between TC1 (Europe/Africa) and TC3 (Asia/South West Pacific) would be the allowance for the entire "journey", including MAN-LHR as defined under IATA 302.

Yes. The extract above was to show the 40 kg was wrong anyway.

Looks like QF is just applying it’s default J baggage allowance to the sector that wouldn’t necessarily confer QP benefits - even though BA’s J allowance is greater.

Yes - it's a poor show from the website. IATA 302 was supposed to make things easier.

Have you tried looking up the booking on www.ba.com?

My understanding for these long haul journeys is the baggage rule that applies for the whole itinerary is the most significant carrier (MSC). What is clear is that Qantas would be the MSC in this case given the sheer distances (and crossing of IATA zones) and therefore would apply for the whole flight.

In terms of the logistics of this, when you check in your bag for Australia it should check through to the final destination of MAN (i.e. no need to pick up bag at LHR). Hence, there should be no worries about excess baggage on the outbound. For the return, during check in you will check in your bags as normal, and if the agent tries to assess excess baggage ask them who the most significant carrier is and go from there.

...
That only applies for itineraries involving the USA or "single journey◇" itineraries.

For all other itineraries a separate MSC is assessed for each "journey◇" that make up the itinerary.

◇ A "journey" is a series of flights without any stopover.

Thank you all for your replies.

On the QF website, it clearly says that the Qantas Club additional baggage allowance isn't a oneworld allowance, and the base allowance is 40kg. I don't think I'll be over on the way out, but if I am, I'm hoping I'll fall through the cracks. On the way back, I'll definitely keep it under the 52kg I'll be allowed on the QF flights. With 12kg being the maximum I could be over, I was just trying to work out how much it might cost. I just found a page for oversize bags which says that if the bag is over 23kg there's a cost of 65 GBP / 75 EUR / 100 USD / 100 CAD. It's on this page:

Does that mean that it would be £65 regardless of whether it weighs 23.01kg or 32kg? I just want to be prepared for the worst case scenario, not necessarily what might happen.

Yes. It tells me the dimensions of my cabin baggage. It tells me that I have a 40kg allowance. It doesn't show how I can add baggage. I'm guessing it's because it's a QF booking / ticket.

How many pieces of luggage are you expecting? If more than 2 checked bags, I would assume the “worse case” prices for each additional bag are those in the screenshot above?

If it’s only 2 checked bags plus carry on, I’d expect you’ll be ok.

Just two pieces of luggage.
