My partner and I are traveling from the US to Australia via Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific.

We are in Hong Kong for two days before traveling home to Perth. The problem is that when we left the US to travel to Hong Kong we packed to the allowance of 2 checked bags of 23kgs each, and are now faced with the much smaller allowance on the Hong Kong to Perth leg of 20kgs total and excess charges of $30 per kg. Which will be about $1600.

The website is not totally clear on what constitutes travel from the US, such as whether we can still qualify for the Americas allowance after stopping in Hong Kong because that is where we originated. I couldn't find a relevant email contact with Cathay and don't have telephone access here so if anyone can help me or give me some information that'd be awesome.

Cheers

My understanding was that if it was all booked on a single ticket, then the luggage allowance was valid for the whole trip. However, the more experienced members here might know for sure.

Since it is all on the one ticket and you are travelling from the USA, you can have two bags up to 32kg each per PAX!

If you purchased your tickets before 1st December 2010:This is the important bit:
Central, North and South Americas¹ ...

¹Applicable if you are travelling to, from or via the USA, Canada, select Central and South American countries.
If you purchased your tickets on or after 1st December 2010:This is the important bit:
Piece System – for Central, North and South Americas³ ...

³Applicable if you are travelling to, from or via the USA, Canada, select Central and South American countries.

I would print out the applicable web page (showing the URL) and bring it with you on check-in, as well as having a printed copy of the e-ticket showing your travel from the USA.

Thanks so much for your help. I was very stressed about having to leave any of the nice (and very reasonably priced) stuff I got from the US.
