Had a BOR-BGY 9pm flight blow out to a 1am (next day) departure and thus 2:30 am arrival. Was pretty frustrating at the time, particularly with the struggle to get cabs at BGY and then arriving at Mercure Bergamo Centro Palazzo Dolci to be informed "we have given your room to someone else". Yes, that's correct - they 'gave' away our pre-paid room even after being emailed twice circa 8 am evening prior and a phone call at that time as well. (They booked us into another, non-Accor unrelated hotel on the next block). That fight continues (current offer from them 2,000 Accor points worth I guess Euro40).

Anyway back to Ryanair. Made a claim under EU261. I think the original cost for 2 pax was AUD$142. So, thanks to EU261 we should receive compo of AUD$780. Pretty happy about that!

The thread title includes "successful", implying you already have the money but your last para suggests otherwise. Have you been successful in getting compensation or not?

I have an email from Ryanair indicating the transfer will be made within 10 days. Seems legit, however in your experience do you believe Ryanair might advise me of that but not send the actual cash? Their communication over the issue has been reasonable to date. They responded to the initial claim with a few questions, and once answered responded again. But sure, until the money is in the bank well...

On another note, I could not successfully get their online claim system to recognise a CBA Swift/IBAN code at all despite multiple attempts at formatting it as advised. Thankfully we have a Natwest account and that is the destination bank for the payment which will be made in GBP.

So for those of us not familiar with EU261, were you able to claim from Ryanair due to the 4hr delay? What happens if one doesn't have a Euro bank account?

I’m glad you asked, so that others may benefit. Here’s the detail:

1. RIGHT TO COMPENSATION
If you are involuntarily denied boarding or your flight is cancelled or delayed by three or more hours with respect to the scheduled arrival time (provided no extraordinary circumstances occur), you are entitled to receive the following amount from us:
 €250 in respect of all flights of 1,500km or less; or
 €400 in respect of all intra-EU flights of more than 1,500km, and
for all other flights between 1,500km and 3,500km.
If we are able to offer you re-routing on an alternative flight and the arrival time of the re-routed flight does not exceed the scheduled arrival time of the flight booked:
 by two hours, in respect of all flights of 1,500km or less; or
 by three hours, in respect of all intra-EU flights of more than
1,500km, and for all other flights between 1,500km and 3,500km. The compensation set out above may be reduced by 50%. Distances shall be measured by the great circle route method.

With regard the bank account issue, I can’t adequately explain why I could not get Ryanair’s online claim form to accept a CBA account number converted to an ‘IBAN’ (International Bank Number). It involves writing the BSB and account number combined with CBA’s Swift code in a certain format. I’m informed it is possible, so that a recipient should not need an Euro (or in my case UK) bank account.

Get a "Wise" account and then you can set up a GBP account or Euro account that they can deposit into. Once it's in the account you can hold it in that currency or convert to another, including AUD. Once its AUD you can transfer it to your Aussie account. Simples !

{I have no association with Wise. I do have and use my Wise accounts extensively. A British company with local Oz licensing and APRA compliance.}

At the risk of getting off topic…
What are the wise exchange rates like?

They are live mid-market rates, so far better than banks. They change constantly. Download the Xe.com app and you can see them live for any currency you set to follow in the app. You can also check current rates on the website home page. I monitor the rates and buy and hold when they are the most favourable. It's like trading live FX. Even for single transactions you will know instantly the rate and cost.

Glad you received the funds, one thing they might do is not allow you to book another ticket with them.
Really? I hadn't heard that before. So you mean just by making a claim I go on the Ryanair blacklist? I found this article on credit card chargebacks resulting in blacklists, now that I can understand a bit. Actually, I was considering this with Mercure given they screwed me over on the hotel room. But I'm going to take the safe option with them and just accept the 2K points I think Ryanair threatens to blacklist people who claim holiday refunds from their bank

I've been waiting for my EU621 €400 claim since August and still haven't received it. Unbelievable as I thought they would honor their word! They are now saying it will be in my Australian bank account within 14 business days from Tuesday week ago, 6 days tomorrow. Phonecalls to Ryan Air have been unsuccessful. Any idea who I should take this matter too apart from Ryan Air lol? Would appreciate advice. Thanks Vicki

Any chance it is a bank account issue? I had problems quoting an AU bank account in the correct format so ended up using a GBP account that I had access to.
