Middle Eastern airline Etihad, one of the largest shareholders in Virgin Australia, will push for an increase in its quota of flights to Australia over the next year, in a further challenge to Qantas on routes to Europe.
With Qantas and Virgin engaged in a public relations battle, Etihad also said it would give the latter the support it needed to return to profitability and be competitive.
Under an air-rights agreement between Australia and the United Arab Emirates, Etihad will reach its allowed number of 35 flights a week to the major cities once it begins daily services to Perth in July. It has room for an extra seven flights a week, but would have to fly to a regional centre.

Just dump more capacity on Australia.... Bit like that snake on a crocodile - every time it exhales just squeeze a bit harder

Etihad Airways is one of the best airline flying to Australia

In fact, the World Travel Awards recognized the Abu Dhabi-based airline as the world’s best for the fourth consecutive year.

If that’s not enough, world travel agencies and frequent fliers that vote for the so-called Oscar of travel awards put Etihad as the leading first class; fifth year running.

Etihad also beat out its much larger and older rivals — Qatar Airways and Emirates from Dubai — to be ranked the world’s best airline flying to the Middle East.

Its product is superior to many of its competition,so why not have the best flying here and we all do have a choice who to fly of course ....

Or they could get VA the capacity and apply their code to help VA.

Its a similar situation to CX in HK and they havent blinked - just kept their prices keen and maintained their market share, once people fly these carriers once they get a sense of the value in paying more for full service.

A good example is HKG-KUL, AK is usually 20% lower than CX but once you've flown into the LCCT at KLIA in one of their knee crunching 320s you'll go right back to CX :)

But QF doesn't seem to be anywhere near within 20% of Asian LCCs, apart from br fares

Good Lord! Is this the voice of EY PR dept?

peterk ... Tell us about the working conditions of EY staff. Tell us how they flew on from Jakarta to AUH knowing there was an arsonist aboard .. resulting in two further fires in flight. (Schedule over safety?) Tell us how they have expunged Israel off the map and refuse to board Israeli citizens.

I've flown EY in J from Abu Dhabi to MEL. Comfortable seats - robotic, unsmiling FAs.

What's the likelihood that EY do get approval to increase flights?

Could be difficult as both EK and EY belong to the same country, UAE. I think the bilateral agreement is between UAE and Australia. Not Dubai and Australia and Abu Dhabi and Australia. No chance of EK 'reducing' services to let EY in :)

I don't think Israeli citizens would ever travel on EY anyway. BTW EY offers Kosher meals for people of Jewish faith but El AL does not offer Muslim meals :)

That's why I asked. With both EY and EK being from the same country, I would guess the bilaterals would need to be re-negotiated. It could be up to the UAE government to allocate the number of flights to Australia. Not that I think that will happen.

I have a feeling if it came down to EK VS EY, the latter would win given the $$$ behind them.

EY should just inject cash into VA and increase VA flights from Aus to AUH.

I'm reading that the UAE airlines are allowed 140 one-way frequencies as of this month. I don't have the exact figures for who operates what, but there is are some free capacity. Also the restrictions are only to major centers in Australia, so the EK flight to ADL is not counted.
