Middle Eastern airline Etihad, one of the largest shareholders in Virgin Australia, will push for an increase in its quota of flights to Australia over the next year, in a further challenge to Qantas on routes to Europe.
With Qantas and Virgin engaged in a public relations battle, Etihad also said it would give the latter the support it needed to return to profitability and be competitive.
Under an air-rights agreement between Australia and the United Arab Emirates, Etihad will reach its allowed number of 35 flights a week to the major cities once it begins daily services to Perth in July. It has room for an extra seven flights a week, but would have to fly to a regional centre.
