Re: Etihad : a series of fires were lit on-board flight from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi

At AKL emirates checkin the information monitors let checking in passengers know that cigarette lighters should be put in a pocket on their person instead of in the carryon.

Really? I thought cigarette lighters, matches and the like are always prohibited on board - in any position. As you can't smoke, there's no reason to have any of that sort of ignition source in the cabin.

A pack of safety matches or one cig lighter is permitted, and can only be carried on person, not in carry on or checked.

Good grief. Would never have thought. So all the Etihad arsonist would have had to do is pat his pockets and he knew he/she was good to go.

Again, I can't see any reason for this allowance, given you can't use them on board, or even in the airport terminal (in most cases). Has this 'allowance' ever had serious debate amongst the Australian regulators, markis10?

I might write a letter to CASA.

You would have to ask the regulators, however I believe they exist because most airports actually have smoking rooms (KUL even has a smoke shop in theirs) and it's safer to have it on you in case of malfunction than in a spot where they cannot easily be reached.

Australia is somewhat unique in not catering for smokers, of course here we know that space is far more valuable being rented out.

Even the TSA lifted the lighter ban back in 2007. Lighters were only prohibited for a few years after 2001.

At AKL checking area yesterday there were TV monitor advisories reminding Pax to keep their cigarette lighters in the pocket- it's not allowed in carryon or checkin luggage.
