Me again - I booked flights through Flybuys - cheaper than I expected! I recommend trying them.
Unfortunately, their booking engine didn't allow me to choose the fare basis the way AmEx did (but even after spending quite some time on the phone to AmEx, they still couldn't get me those very same flights), so I've ended up with the following two economy Fare Bases:
Canberra to Dublin MHWRTAU all the way
Dublin to Canberra HHWRTAU all the way
I think the first is a Classic Fare and the second Flex? I was trying to book Flex both ways - AmEx had Flex for only a few hundred dollars more (because one direction already was Flex), but of course I couldn't book it through them and Flybuys Travel didn't offer the option! - as my point balance (with a little tweaking from purchasing points etc) would allow a lot more upgrading.
Do you any of your bright sparks know if it's possible to change the Fare type AFTER booking?
Thanks in advance.
Of course I've now found that booking through a travel agent has locked me out of choosing seats through Etihad's website, making the upgrade to Business Class a little more important - 13 hours in a middle seat would be hell...
