Does anyone have experience booking award travel with Etihad with AA miles, they appear to have three classes of redemptions, which one would be equivalent to AASaver?

Hi avaction,

Yes I do have experience booking EY with AA. I found that they have EXCELLENT availability on the AUH-MEL/SYD route. I've booked F for two around 4-5 times and some of these flights were booked a week or less in advance and I had no problems getting seats. I used KVS before I called to be sure there was availability. Cost is 60k miles per person in F one way AUH-MEL/SYD. Taxes/surcharges/carrier-imposed charges were very reasonable at around US$30-60 each time. However if you are travelling within 21 days you have to pay a US$75 per person expediate fee which I copped a fair few times. But yeh if your travel is far in advance then that is not an issue.

Any other questions feel free to ask and I'm happy to help where I can, as many on here have helped me. Good luck.

Being new to this, could you help with "KVS", is that a booking search? I understand that these flights must be booked manually through AA reservations, the only ones online are BA, Qantas & Iberia ??

KVS is a client bad utility that provides GDS information similar to Expert Flyer.

And that means ..... ?? Sorry, completely new to this, a "bad utility", "GDS", I'm lost!!

KVS is a online tool used to trawl for award seats on airlines.
It is a paid service. Other options for looking for award seats are Expert Flyer and Award Nexus, both are paid services for Award search purposes (amongst other things in the case of Expert Flyer).

You can check Etihad rewards for free here:

Reward Flights

If you find availability there, it is likely you'll be able to book with AA. No idea how the Etihad classes map through to AA, GuestSeat is the cheapest redemption on the Etihad site.

Thanks for this - hadn't thought of trying Etihad to see their own rewards... oops. I have used Expert Flyer and KVS at times but both accounts inactive at the moment so good to have a play.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Are you able to advise how the Etihad seat classes translate through to an AAdvantage award based on the AA chart?

Huh?

EY have Economy/Coach, Business and First.

You just need to look for partner Milsaaver AAwards in those classes.

Thanks serfty. I did not really understand the question.

Sorry for being unclear. I am presuming that in on the etihad site I need to find "guest seat" availability.

Sure -"Guest Economy", "Guest Business" and "Guest First".

The Saver, Value & Freedom options represent points purchases of revenue fares.

Unfortunately my best mate has had a fail with AA and Etihad tonight. I was helping him find some seats to go to Europe around December 13, and found bountiful availability with 2 x Guest Business seats on Etihad for multiple dates in December. When he called AA though, they told him no dice - he was told no availability in December at all, and that Etihad availability often only opens in in the weeks before the dates (in that agent's experience at least).

Any other experience with this?

just to confirm if using EY from australia to usa, or australia to europe - it needs to be booked as 2 separate awards? e.g. SYD-AUH F 60k and then AUH-DFW F 90k?

so not the greatest value when compared to say a USDM booking?

You got it. The only alternative for a single award to Europe is with QR, albeit in J.
