Ethiopian 737 Max 8 crash and Fallout


The above link is for a short video done by an african guy - nothing too technical or new in it, but I really enjoyed hearing his comments from a more local perspective. I particularly liked his story of the greek DYKWIA type who missed the flight. (about 2:20 into the vid)

I have to admit, I don’t find that comforting at all and doesn’t change my decision not to get on a MAX.

I saw something on twitter about Aerolineas pilots union mandating they refuse to fly it until further info from the investigation.

I’m actually wondering how many MAX pilots have run into the MAX issue inflight and successfully negotiated it.

I agree. What I find disconcerting is that regardless of whether that announcement was always intended to be made on that day, continuing with it in the face of a major and similar disaster that initiated the review and changes, reeks of insensitivity, callousness, political motives and foolhardy bravado, IMHO.

The FAA state that design changes to aircraft were indeed necessary (and are yet to be carried out). The FAA state they have not had time to investigate the Ethiopian crash. The FAA still make an announcement that all the Max 8 aircraft are airworthy. How can they know that with such certainty? Are they in fact gambling with the lives of many more people?

The Lionair crew who operated that same aircraft on the previous flight did - but if I recall correctly they did not report it as a serious matter
 
There’s multiple reports of the flight crew being heard reporting unreliable airspeed and control issues. I’ve heard a sim instructor say that he’s observed pilots often struggling with UAS scenarios in the sim.
 
I wouldn't hold the opinion of the FAA in too high regard. The FAA does have a history of being to close to the manufacturers and not coming down hard enough (TK 981 for example).

Even the whole issue with the 787s batteries, showed that they were to easily certified even though there had been a few cargo planes catch fire due to the li-ion batteries.
 
With all the groundings (so far) means about a third of the 737 MAX global fleet is now on ice for the time being.

Virgin refusing to comment other than still planning to take delivery, while other airlines and countries ground the aircraft.

VA pilot body have come out with a statement completely off the VA company statement script saying:

‘We look forward to its introduction at VA as it brings outstanding commercial advantages to the airline and enhanced customer appeal’.

Think someone will be getting a phone call to toe company line.... Whoops....
 
Just got a text from my wife saying that the friend organising the girls trip to Fiji has successfully changed flights with FJ and will now leave from SYD. No idea of what fees were involved but she did mention that the FJ staff fully understood the predicament and said that there has already been a few cancellations and they expect more

Don't want to alarm you but FJ's MAX does occasionally fly to SYD. Im guessing that in their rebooking they selected a flight with a different aircraft?

Link to Straits times on Silk Air grounding the MAX in their fleet.

It is interesting the countries / Airlines saying 'yes our fleet is safe' and other countries grounding it. Presumably they're all making decisions with the same information but coming up with considerably different outcomes!!

Although I read Southwest made an adjustment to their MAX aircraft. I don't know if other operators have done similar.

When the 787s got grounded over the battery problems, it took NH, JL and LO grounding theirs volunteerly before the regulators did anything.
