the Superloop app is a global (as in all calls, data, SMS, not global =world) roaming switch:

Looking at the Superloop T&Cs, any roaming charges would come out of your pre-paid PAYG balance. So if that's $0 then it wouldn't be possible to accidentally run up charges. Receiving SMS is free.

One nice feature of Telstra Wholesale is that VoWiFi is still available to you while overseas. So if you put your phone into Airplane mode, then turn WiFi back on and connect to a WiFi network (to force it to use VoWiFi) you can make calls and send SMS over WiFi exactly like if your phone was at home in Australia.

Yep this was the main reason for selecting Superloop as a Telstra wholesaler (and moving.our NBN onto them also, which finally got all sorted today!).

I've got the bcengi esim for the VoWifi while roaming. So hoping it's fairly seamless.

I must be doing something wrong.

I've got a wifi connection, have enabled roaming on the Superloop Sim. Am currently in NZ and when I try ringing another NZ mobile number, the bcengi esim won't allow calls (fair enough it's a data Sim only).

If I try calling using the Superloop Sim, I'm receiving an automated message that wifi calling is only available to Australian numbers and I must disable wifi and use international roaming to call foreign numbers. Does that seem correct?

You’ll need to use roaming through Superloop or get a plan from an NZ provider if you want to call an NZ number.

I'm a Telstra customer (direct) and have never had an issue calling local numbers of the country I am travelling in using VoWiFi (or just roaming on 4G/5G).

That's interesting! Are you charged a roaming fee every day?

Personal experience - I've used Telstra Prepaid / Boost / More Telco / Aldi and couldn't call any local numbers which fits the description of their vowifi service usage whilst overseas.

Yes, work pays for the day passes. I could be wrong but I'm sure I've done this.

Edit: Presumably you could spin up a VPN tunnel back to Australia to circumvent the limitation....

I believe Wi-Fi calling itself is a VPN and doesn't tunnel through whatever other VPN you have on your phone. You'd need a travel router or something to do that.

Wi-Fi Calling and SMS​

Wi-Fi Calling lets you make and receive phone calls over a compatible Wi-Fi connection or hot spot. Wi-Fi SMS lets you send and receive SMS.

Your Wi-Fi Calling or SMS compatible mobile will use a Wi-Fi network to connect with other compatible devices within Australia – even when on a Pre-Paid plan. This is useful when:

• You’re travelling overseas
• You want to extend your coverage while indoors
• You need to stay connected if there’s a mobile network outage.

An icon on your screen like a phone with a Wi-Fi symbol next to it means your phone will use Wi-Fi Calling to make or receive calls. Because your device still authenticates with Telstra, Wi-Fi voice calls are protected by the same industry standards as other mobile calls.

What does it cost?​

There’s no additional charge to use Wi-Fi Calling on a Telstra mobile and the Wi-Fi data is unmetered if you’re using a Telstra fixed broadband connection.

Wi-Fi Calling allows you to make and receive calls to devices in Australia at no additional charge. Calls to all other countries will need to be made over the mobile network and standard charges will apply.

Calls made using Wi-Fi Calling will appear on your bill as a Wi-Fi Call.

On other broadband providers, data will be metered and charged according to their plan. Your location will be the ‘default regional location’ so you may need to include the area code when calling, for example: 03 9000 000.
