the Superloop app is a global (as in all calls, data, SMS, not global =world) roaming switch:

Looking at the Superloop T&Cs, any roaming charges would come out of your pre-paid PAYG balance. So if that's $0 then it wouldn't be possible to accidentally run up charges. Receiving SMS is free.

One nice feature of Telstra Wholesale is that VoWiFi is still available to you while overseas. So if you put your phone into Airplane mode, then turn WiFi back on and connect to a WiFi network (to force it to use VoWiFi) you can make calls and send SMS over WiFi exactly like if your phone was at home in Australia.

Yep this was the main reason for selecting Superloop as a Telstra wholesaler (and moving.our NBN onto them also, which finally got all sorted today!).

I've got the bcengi esim for the VoWifi while roaming. So hoping it's fairly seamless.

I must be doing something wrong.

I've got a wifi connection, have enabled roaming on the Superloop Sim. Am currently in NZ and when I try ringing another NZ mobile number, the bcengi esim won't allow calls (fair enough it's a data Sim only).

If I try calling using the Superloop Sim, I'm receiving an automated message that wifi calling is only available to Australian numbers and I must disable wifi and use international roaming to call foreign numbers. Does that seem correct?

Telstra wifi calling whilst overseas only allows outgoing calls & texts to Australian phone numbers but won’t restrict incoming calls/texts if vowifi is on in my experience (switch on plane mode to disconnect cellular service to a local tower).

You’ll need to use roaming through Superloop or get a plan from an NZ provider if you want to call an NZ number.

I'm a Telstra customer (direct) and have never had an issue calling local numbers of the country I am travelling in using VoWiFi (or just roaming on 4G/5G).

When overseas and connected to Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Calling allows you to make and receive calls back to Australia at no additional charge. Calls to other destinations are not enabled while you're overseas and will need to be made over the mobile network. Standard charges apply.

If we don’t know where your device is (e.g. your device is in Flight Mode) and you make a Wi-Fi call to an international number while overseas, you may be charged international calling rates based on your last known location, which would be whenever you last connected to a mobile network.
