I know others have mentioned this in the forum already, but I continue to be amazed by the lack of value in the epiQure offers. I got my membership as a complimentary gift for P1s, but I would not be happy if I had paid for it.

Yet again, another wine offer that is no cheaper than the same wine at Dan Murphys or elsewhere online. Do the epiQure people not even bother to check these things before setting a price or buying the wine?

Amazing.

I was quite blunt in a recent epiqure survey. The q was "what would make you buy more from Epiqure?" Answer: "you quitting with your ridiculous and over-inflated prices!"

Hopefully they got my sentiment.

I dont think they ever promised it would be cheaper.
Just squeezing some juice out of the membership base - and amazing how many people jump at these 'convenience' offers.

In general I have found epiQure prices to be decent, not mindblowing.

Unlike Cellarmasters, who continue to send me offers, that I find often more expensive than discounted retail.

On the latest offer
2010 Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir
epiQure 24.99 (min 6)
Dan Murphys 24.90 (per 6) / 26.20 single
Top Wineries 26.99 single
Kemenys 25.99 single
Cellarmasters 29.99 (min 6)
TWE Staff site 24.xx (min 6) - private site that I include for comparison only

I've seen some Epiqure offers that are ok, but you're right - I don't think I've seen anything cheaper than what I could pick it up at my local Dan Murphy's.

I won't be renewing my (paid) membership when it expires next month, unless there's a decent bonus with it. The 2006 Wolf Blass Cab Shiraz I got when I joined was fantastic.

Of course with Cellarmasters the vouchers make all the difference!

Nearly 1 year on and nothing has changed... Lets look at the latest offering from Penfolds

Penfolds 2010 Bin 389
Dan Murphy $334.20 per case of 6
epiqure $377.94 per case of 6

Even less with a discounted wish card & a visit to starthere :D

Penfolds 2011 Bin 128
Dan Murphy $169.80 per case of 6
epiqure $179.94 per case of 6

Getting better I guess...

Penfolds 2010 Bin 150
Dan Murphy $358.80 per case of 6
epiqure $419.94 per case of 6

To the defense of epiqure, their offerings include free delivery & 3 points per dollar..... But for value you still cant go past Dan's with a points earning discounted wish card, a visit to starthere & then visit to the Dan Murphy website for click & collect, using this method, one of the examples above you would save over $96 on six bottles or ~$16 per bottle

Those latest releases do seem pretty badly priced, but like with everything, it depends what you purchase. Some will be better value at one store, others at another store.

I like Taittinger (and would love some bonus points if you're reading QF), and at Dan's a case of six comes to $422.95 (which does seem odd, as they advertise it for $56.99 a bottle in any six - it would still be more expensive regardless), while Epiqure sells a case of six for $305.94 ($50.99 a bottle). That said, the vintage Dan's stock, the Brut Millésimé 2005, that's $92.99 a bottle, and as low as $88.35 in a six... while Epiqure sells the same vintage for $99.99.

The Veuve Clicquot appears to be virtually the same price on both stores, with Dan's beating Epiqure by about $5. That said, Epiqure recently offered a case of six with a bonus 2500 points. You be the judge what's better value.

Recently a great deal was had by all on the John Duval Plexus. Dan's sells it for $186.09 for six, Epiqure betters them with $179.94 for six and also threw in 3000 bonus points.

And while specials shouldn't be counted in comparisons, one of the great things about Epiqure is that there's quite often a 10% or 15% offer available, further reducing the cost.

I think they just need to realign their range with a few more price points. Personally, the 'Qantas Lounge Wines' dozen has four of my favourite wines in it, so I'm pretty happy to order a few cases of those and collect 10,000 bonus points over the course of the next 6 months. Might then do the same with SWMBO and then reassess whether the annual fee is worth it as you don't need to be a member to get that particular dozen.

And don't forget the bonus for first dozen and then for 48th bottle - those points have a value.

Just need to remember that when using a 10% or 15% discount, you are not eligible for any bonus points specials. So the 3000 bonus points mentioned above would not apply if you were using a 15% off discount code.

But as with most thing, there is no one winner. Its a matter of shopping around and finding the deal that works for you at the time. But this does show that at some times Dans is good value, other times Epicure is good value, and other options come into play from time to time. And each of these may be different for different people. Are you just after the cheapest price? Or a good bonus points offer? or both?

And if you want to purchase and ship to me, PM me for the delivery address ;)

Completely forgot, mainly seeing as I've already achieved those bonuses, on my account at least :p

On that note, I'm sure I read that someone managed both bonus points and a discount, but the T&C do advise of what you said being true.

Are those bonus' only available once? ;)
That would change the whole equation if they were offered each year. Personally, I have found some of the specials and especially the mixed dozens fantastic value. The specials offered before christmas were much cheaper than Dans or anywhere else (I priced every wine) and huge FF bonus points offered on top. I may not have necessarily purchased all of the wines in the mixed dozens outside of these offers but almost without exception have really enjoyed them, in some cases loved them. If they do the same again, I will be loading up including joining more family members up

Forgot to mention, I originally joined (free) to purchase the Cullen Dry White. They were a dollar more each than Dan's but with 6 QFF points per dollar spent represented fantastic value to me. Plenty of deals like that seem to crop up during the year and they will keep me interested. Just bought 12 bottles of the Veuve, with the bonus points represented fantastic value in my opinion

Exactly. I have now received my 48th bottle bonus, so any subsequent purchases may also involve Mrs NM becoming a member - just hoping for another free joining bonus ;)

I suspect that "loophole" may have been closed ... But if anyone does scope both, then its fantastic value :)

Looks like its all sold out anyway, so they must be really happy with that extra margin they already made... :D

6979 points posted last night for 12 bottles of Veuve. Price was actually competitive with Dans but those points make it even better. Unlike Shintaro10x we aren't all unhappy with what's being offered

Just for the record, I'm happy to pay a little extra for buying wine from qantas, however sacrificing a ~$100 saving for a mere ~3k in points I do not see value

But if you're happy with your purchase then my opinions don't count. Enjoy the wine and points... Cheers

You convinced me shintaro10x on starthere and Woolies gift cards so I got 10.25% off $54.80 for Veuve at Dans plus the points I earned getting the gift cards.
Veuve at $49 is a lot closer to $39 in Los Angeles.

but you did miss out on 189 QFF per bottle cove ;) .. but using the ~$14 you saved per bottle towards a future ATO fee, you will be "QFF / KF / VA" miles ahead as you know :D
