Entry restrictions and quarantine systems when entering Japan

Thank you for flying with Japan Airlines.

In response to the spread of mutated strains of coronavirus and the declaration of a state of emergency, the Japanese Government is fortifying border controls and quarantine measures for people entering Japan.
  • Temporary suspension of new entries to Japan for foreign nationals from all countries and regions.
  • Suspension of special measures that were in place for those returning to or re-entering Japan from a short-term business trip to all countries and regions.
  • Strengthened quarantine measures during the state of emergency period.
  • Increased quarantine measures for people entering Japan from countries/regions where the mutated strain of the virus has been discovered.
If you are planning to return to or enter Japan, please check the information on the JAL website in advance.

Can't see how the Olympics can be held this year in Tokyo even sans spectators!

Japan has one of the lowest trust factors for vaccines in the world.
In other news, Japan has the healthiest, and longest-living populations in the world.

Careful use of words. If they have low trust, that doesn't seem to have translated into low actual immunisation rates ....

For example, 99% for DTP3, vs 95% in Australia:

For others can drill down from here, but if this WHO figures are accurate :

The Japan numbers are both better and worse than they seem, but mainly worse.

2%-3% of deaths are of people with COVID-19. Deaths caused solely by COVID-19 are of course lower. Excess deaths for 2020 were negative. Suicides are surging.

Nationwide tests for Sunday totaled a pathetic 18,349, which left Tuesday's positivity rate just short of 30%. Day-of-the-week effects are still ridiculously strong for one year after Japan's first cases.

When Tokyo reports (say) 1,200 cases, the average severity is much greater than one might expect elsewhere. People generally only make it to the testing stage if symptomatic, often seriously so.

Out of Tokyo's 1,240 cases yesterday, 177 were aged 70+.

60% were from unknown sources.

Their triaging system puts some people in hospital, some people in hotels, and some people 'waiting' at home (ostensibly for a bed, in reality for a negative test after they get better of their own accord). For Tokyo yesterday those numbers were 2,941 / 843 / 8,966 with an overflow of 7,539 yet to be triaged. That's where the stress is being felt now. Every few days or so there's a report of someone dying at home while waiting.

Activity levels are much higher than during last year's soft lockdown, so there's no obvious brake on the horizon until the weather starts to warm up in a couple of months.
