Hi all.
I fly between MEL and LAX fairly frequently and while trying to watch Warner get his double century I was told by the staff in the First Lounge (LAX) that they cant access the cricket.
Qantas is an Australian airline. All they have is basketball and gridion on the TV in the LAX lounge. How hard would it be to have the cricket, AFL and rugby?

IPTV is your friend.

Cricket anywhere in the world.

Willow HD is fairly standard across many cable packages in the US. And is definitely available via IPTV without a VPN.

All subject to local rights.
They probably only have access to a standard US payTV package

Using a VPN to access Australian content is I suspect a little too grey for Qantas lounge.

Cricket is also a little harder to access as it's not shown on 7Play.

And I bet the Yanks are peeved that they can't see the gridiron in our lounges and the people from right outer mongolia can't see the Mongolian summer Frit Frit league. That'll be QF's fault as well.
Crickey Qantas has a lot to answer for.;)

Well, seeing as Qantas has some form of loose partnership with Kayo to earn points, I don't see why they couldn't get a login to stream the content to their lounges around the world.

I think the difference here is that the question is why can't the coverage be displayed in a Qantas-owned/operated lounge, as oppose to an Admirals Club. The Yanks would be using a Qantas Club over here, as AA doesn't have their own lounges AFAIK.

The only place I think it’s realistic to expect cricket to be shown in an airline lounge would be the subcontinent.

I’ve seen downhill ski races being shown in Swiss and Austrian airports. Wouldn’t see that too many other places.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

<snip>

From a technical point of view there is nothing stopping them from doing so, from a content licensing point of view I would imagine there are many hurdles.

Much content is locked up behind archaic old world licensing contracts from a time when getting content from one place to another was a genuine logistics problem.

Maybe within Australia something like that may be possible, but absolutely not overseas where someone else would hold the local rights.

In any event the issue goes well beyond the control or capabilities of an airline or even an airport.

I watched the majority of the second test from Adelaide in Athens through Willow on my iPad via WiFi in the accom I was staying at.

Highly recommended. It’s free and hasn’t needed a VPN anywhere I’ve been.

But why would they choose to show cricket? Or AFL? Who'd decide what's the best programming of the day?
Personally, I find cricket being possibly the most boring entertainment ever - would rather even watch Kardashians or Big Brother and those I avoid like plague. 🙈 A good middle ground news channel or mainstream series in the local context are probably pretty good choices and easy to license for showing at airports, etc. For anything else, wifi & VPN or a similar solution come handy.

You obviously haven't seen some of the "news debates" which have happened on this site.
There are pro- and anti- "insert news channel here" debates aplenty on this site. Mostly accusing the other side of bias. In some cases right, in other cases not so much.

That said I kinda consider TV's in lounges to be an unwelcome distraction (TV's in restaurants is a personal hate of mine). About the only time I've ever been happy to see a TV in a lounge has been when I've had my kids with me, and they have had kid (and parent) friendly movies on.

Besides, I tend to have my own collection of movies, TV series and music to watch / listen to whilst waiting at airports. (Gotta love Netflix and a mobile phone plan that gives a decent amount of data, even overseas :) )

Scoose my ignorance but what is Willow pls?

I pay annual sub to AFL Live to watch any game I choose whilst OS - I also have a one eyed Pies supporting niece in Houston who has my login deets and she also takes advantage of it.

Cruiser, Willow.tv is an app that allows you to receive cricket live to phones/tablets both android and apple. No fee, but I do suspect that you’d need a VPN in US/Canada as they are the provider in those countries.

I’ve run it for years in Aus without a VPN on remote minesites. I have just returned from Finland, Iceland, UK, Switzerland, Greece, HK and it worked in all of them free and no VPN.

Best thing ever for cricket junkies in non-cricket lands.
