I'm currently in New York City and tomorrow i fly to Vancouver Canada. I have only been in the USA for about two weeks now And still have over one year left on my ESTA expiration.

A few months ago when I enquired with the Canadian consulate about entering Canada They replied and said that all I will need is a valid Australian passport And proof that I can support myself financially within Canada for my stay.

I know it's short notice but can anyone confirm that this is the case? I'm flying from New York City to Vancouver , staying there for 5 days then flying back into LA for 7 days , then fly home.

Will US customs have a issue with me re-entering the United States after being in Canada or will I have any other problems that may occur? I assuming this is a common thing thing some tourists do ? I thought that as long as my ESTA period is not OVER 90 days I should not have a problem? And my passport doesn't expire until 2021. I didn't think that I'll need to reapply for another ESTA as it's still VALID for two years

Thank you I know that I can rely on the members of this forum to help me out

I did this on the train between Seattle and Vancouver. Just the same as going through any inbound immigration in any other country.

This was back when you still had the green visa waiver forms stapled in your passport and this wasn't taken out in Seattle (as there's not really any checkin for the train) so when re-entering the USA I didn't need to fill out another form, the immigration office said they'd just use that one when I left from LA and he just gave my passport another stamp. That's probably all a thing of the past now anyway given the forms don't exist.

When leaving Vancouver, USA immigration is actually there in Canada so there was nothing to clear States side (just like a domestic arrival).

All in all a fairly painless process. Canadian immigration are a bit cough on entry but nothing too bad. They remind me of the Kiwis actually.

Thanks N860CR...

I'm more concerned about arriving back at LAX from Canada as I don't like it when I first arrived here lol if would be great if immigration and custom is done at the Canadian end and just get off plane From Vancouver into LAX Like a domestic flight.

On the way back when I left Toronto, US immigration and clearance was done before getting on the flight (it was a long long delay and lines, so ensure you leave plenty of time)...I would assume Vancouver airport would be exactly the same

You will not have a problem re-entering the USA.

However, expect an extra load of questions when entering Canada if you are a young Aussie guy travelling solo...they will be suspicious that you don't plan to leave their country and are really off to Whistler (or some other winter wonderland) to work without permission.

I'll be driving from Toronto to New York in a couple of weeks... Done it a few times before and they all seem more concerned with how much $$$ of presents are being brought in / taken out for some reason

thanks for all the replies. I have already a confirmation (proof) of paid ticket out of canada for the 28th of december, and also have paid for my accomodation in full months ago and have proof of that too none of which is near the snow.. Im not too concerned about their questions as im confident i can answer them with proof - as best as i can. As for gifts, well i have done a bit of shopping here in the USA, i have brought a handfull of cheap blurays to take home - totally just over $100 bucks. . . but thats it!

fingers crossed !

The ESTA covers you for 90 days from your first point of entry into the USA. You can go cross into Canada as many times as you like as long as you are within that 90 period. However, if you do cross the boarder several times a week, let me know so I can buy shares in rubber gloves. :):) You will be fine.

N860CR mentioned the train between Seattle and Vancouver and this is a great trip for anyone with a spare half day.

You'll be fine.....

As stated - the only thing to be aware of is that US Preclearance (done in Canada right after check-in) can have long delays so leave lots of time at the airport.

Immigration CANADA to US is done prior to departing Canada (how they allow that totally escaped me).

I didn't have an issue, just the usual bunch of questions.

They allowed that because most Canadians are considered low risk travellers to the US and this way flights out of Canada can land strait in domestic terminals in US airport, therefore facilitating connections. Ireland also offers US immigration pre-clearing at Shannon (useful for BA1 (PAX)

We intend to cross in to Canada at Blaine and we will be in Canada for about a week, then later on in the trip we will cross in to Canada again near Nigara Falls for a day or two. My only concern is that hubby had a couple of low-range drink-driving convictions in Western Australia and a few from when he was young and silly in NZ over 25 years ago. The last one in WA was, if I remember correctly, over five years ago - we'd have to get a copy of the record from the Police to see exactly when it was. Am I correct in assuming I only need my passport and proof of funds but he will need to go through some process, before we leave, to be permitted to enter Canada?

I flew into SFO and on to YVR (Remember the old SQ C fares out of MNL?? Boo Hoo....A sad loss...)

That of course meant entering the USA at SFO... Came back from YVR the next day... Immigration guy thought that was odd... but happily accepted my answer that it was due to "a really good airfare!" Which was..of course...true!
