I've found the flights I want and was all ready to book, but my wife's current passport (in her maiden name) expires in June 2015 and the flights I want to book are in Sep2015. We were planning to get her a new passport in a few months
It won't let me do an Enrich points booking without putting in the passport number and expiry date. It says "be careful with these details as once entered they cannot be changed"

I have searched the forums and it seems with Singapore Airlines, people put in a dummy number and can change it later, but I couldn't find any info for Malaysian
We will apply for a new passport in her married name ASAP I guess, but if we had flights booked on her old passport coming up we wouldn't be able to do that.

Does anyone know if a dummy passport number and expiry could be changed later?

I think you should be able to get it changed and this would probably have to be done by calling them. Only because they must cater for scenarios where people have lost passports and got replacements etc.

We are in a slightly different situation in that we have booked redemption flights LHR-KUL-SYD for July by which time we will be Australian citizens and will have to enter on our new Australian passports. Currently the booking has our UK passport numbers but was assuming (hoping) it would be not too hard to change

Should work out OK. I called the Australian phone number and they were very helpful. They said it's OK to put in a dummy passport number and expiry date and call to change it later. They said there would be no fees for this.
She did emphasise to book now in my wife's married name, not her maiden name like her current passport or there would be a fee for changing names.
Excellent service on the phone from MH

Generally names are important, passport numbers can change with the wind.
Didn't even give it a second thought when I booked an infant with N1111111 and just rocked up with the proper document.
