Re: "Enhancements" to Membership Rewards scheme for Platinum Card / Platinum Reserve

The response from American Express on the failure of my flight purchases from Qantas and LAN to post double points

What card did you use?

I used Reserve, and got my bonus.

07/10/2012 QANTAS AIRWAYS $428.40 856
07/10/2012 QANTAS AIRWAYS $50.00 100

But then, what happened to my Hotel Club booking???

06/10/2012 flariview.com http: SYDNEY $193.99 193

This is just one big coughk up!

Looks like they've gone UK style. In AUS AMEX used to round up over .5, but in the UK you can be .99 and still get 0. Looks like AU is doing the same now...

Have been doing it for approx 6+ months now. Just another Amex change that doesn't benefit the customer.

I've had something similar. The restaurant spend on my platinum after 01/10/12 didnt get triple points and the Tourist Refund Scheme gave me negative points!!!

I sent a complaint email through secure message centre online (cause I'm not wasting time to ring up every time if this happens) to get them to fix it up.

Got a reply three hours later (which was fast) which said their system for 3-2-1-0.5 points didn't clock over for some card accounts and that they would happily fix up the points.

On the Tourist Refund Scheme they said they couldn't find the purchase I made so they will refund the points taken from me. (someone needs to educate them what Tourist Refund Scheme is).

Re: "Enhancements" to Membership Rewards scheme for Platinum Card / Platinum Reserve

My Qantas bookings came through at 2 points per $1

It's such a pain now having to think before using the correct card to maximise points

Before it was easy, just use the Amex issued Amex, I knew the number off the top of my head and still do

Now I have to thing, restaurant/travel - Amex issued Amex
Anything else - Commbank Amex

I still have a few direct debits to change to the Commbank Amex

This whole change is just a royal pain!

Mine's worse lol
Groceries, Petrol = Edge
Travel,Accomodation,Restaurant/food = Plat Charge or Reserve (actually I should just take out the reserve card as it is taking up unnecessary space in the wallet!)
Everything else (Westpac Plat Plus AMEX)

I'm starting to think to get a better earning VISA, but not the citi select as the annual fee is too high for my usage. Thinking EDR? But I can only use it on QF...

You think you are having a hard time? My situation is ridiculous.

Restaurant / food? Reserve
Travel? Reserve
Petrol? Edge
General rubbish? Reserve.
Rubbish that I want extended warranty? Gold charge
Bills? Visa
Insurance but Suncorp Metway group? Reserve because of bonus points.

My Citibank Platinum free for life has extended warranty, travel insurance, close to the same earn rate as AmEx. Also the free flights with AmEx platinum is so hard to book after switching from QF to DJ, with so many restrictions. AmEx is really p*ssing me off.

The only reason I'm keeping the AmEx is because I am flying Virgin Atlantic. Ditching my AmEx means ditching Virgin Atlantic, which is starting to look like path I have to go down.

The only real reason I am stuffing around with keeping my Amex issued Amex's is due to the high credit limit and the "no credit limit" on the charge card.

But as my usage on the charge card has basically gone to $0 I'll likely only be allowed to put $10k on it without ringing for approval

How do I find out what my "limit" is on the plat charge card? like a one lump sum purchase. So far max I have spent on my charge card is $5000 a month but that was spread over several purchases.

Do you travel Upper Class on VS much? What makes you want to keep flying with VS? I prefer to use them for the SYD-HKG-SYD route as 80000 miles return in J is a good deal and also sometimes AMEX MR has transfer bonuses. I may try CX A330 new J on that route when I get a chance as it's 80000 asiamiles as well but I haven't seen any AMEX transfer bonuses for CX AM... Or maybe QF A380 using CX AM as I think that is also 80000 AM.

I'm fairly sure Virgin have upped the points to 100,000 SYD to HKG I did SYD to LHR in upper class in August & I'm sure I paid 200,000 this time

Nope still 80000 miles, I think they increased the HKG-LHR sector...

Qantas
Silver
Virgin
Gold
Cancelled my Amex Charge card today. The CSR just asked the question why I cancelled. After giving them the obvious answer, he cancelled without any hesitation. I got back pro-rata annual fee as well.

So now I have a Affinity Plat Edge and Gold credit card to warehouse my Ascent points. Yes I lose Qantas transfer but I never really value that anyway.

Not sure whether I will apply other cards yet as I do not have any 1.5 points earn per dollar card ATM. Will consider this sometime next year though.

Now I am hoping Citibank will send me a free upgrade to Citi Select Visa card from my free Platinum card.

I don't know why so many people are keeping the Amex Charge Card if it's making life so difficult with remembering which CC to pay with!

Let's say that you have a relatively high expenditure of $50,000 per year on restaurants, travel etc - at an average of 2.5 points/$ you're earning 125k points. But with a Citi Select you'd get 83k - ie 42k less. This is assuming that all of that $50,000 in expenses can actually go on you Amex, plus $50k is probably much higher than most people spend on the higher earning points categories. Which begs the question - in this example, is the $900 annual fee worth paying in addition to the fee you pay for a Visa card (which is essential to have), for only 42,000 more points? For me $900 just isn't worth it for 42,000 pts, especially when you consider you often pay higher merchant fees to get these points.

For me, the Charge card is getting cancelled in the next week when I get around to it, with my 300k points t/f over to my Edge. At $700 a year the Citi Select will become the workhorse at 1.33 pts/$, and the Amex Edge at $99/year will mop up the fuel and supermarket bills and warehouse all those points.

I would take the citi select in a heartbeat but my annual income does not satisfy the sign up requirement. I only quality for the amex plat charge just :)
Maybe get the citi signature and then hope I get an upgrade to select???

Don't ever panic k3nnis the Citi Select can be a bummer for many in our community. Citi Business is the next best Visa card.
