If you're on an emptyish flight, and ask nicely, would the checkin/lounge staff be nice enough to block out the seat(s) next to you?

If the flight is empty, why would you need to?

I believe it can be done by check in staff, but normally only to place shadow next to high status FFs or spare seat next to someone who is invalid (eg broken leg).

I don't believe even lounge staff have this option anymore, with the advent of the Altea system two or three years ago. The duty supervisor and probably even CL staff might have the option but I've been told more than once that lowly lounge staff can't.

I think you would have more luck getting a nice checkin person to put you in an empty section shortly before departure?
