Student tried to take an emotional support hamster on Spirit Air and had to flush it at the airport as they denied it boarding.
Bad info from Spirit Air led me to flush pet hamster down airport toilet, student says

So someone that cant fly without her emotional pet support flushes it down the toilet, has a 10min cry and tweet about it and then gets on a plane.

I judge the **** out of a person that flushes a breathing mammal down the toilet and it seems she lawyered up very quickly. Pity she didnt use the time to find a friend to rat-sit the hamster.

In both the instances I've linked to below the animals are properly trained and there are specific guidelines about how they are to be used. Basically they help victims of crime give evidence.

Support dogs are providing comfort to victims of crime and vulnerable witnesses giving evidence in court, under a pilot program being extended by the Office of Public Prosecutions.

Attorney-General Martin Pakula today joined John Cain, Solicitor for Public Prosecutions, to announce the Victims Support Dog 12-week Pilot Program would be extended into 2018.

Since October, a fully trained three-year-old Labrador named Coop has been available for half a day each week to sit with vulnerable witnesses when they are waiting for court or giving evidence at the OPP’s remote witness facility.

Slightly off topic, but the mention of hospital reminded me of my wife telling me that they allowed the family of a terminally ill patient to bring in her cat into the ward so that she could spend some time with her. Made easier by the fact the patient was in a single room.

Can't remember if she was comatose, but as she was in an ICU, it was quite possible she wasn't aware of her pet cat, but it was a nice sentiment though.

The 3 posts above prove why its upsetting that selfish people have ruined the program for so many.

Im OK with a terminally ill person having their family pet visit them in hospital, Im sure it brings them both great comfort. Im OK with service animals in court to help victims, same with service animals that assist with PTSD, epilepsy/seizure warning. These are real events.

But the pax who wants to take yappy lap dog or pet peacock to the family vacation is whats ruins it for everyone.

Personally, other than actual service animals like highly trained guide dogs ect, I hope Australia never allows pets on board. You have options, use them.

It’s been a long time since this discussion on AFF about service animals on planes in the US.

Saw this photo on another FB group yesterday, so seems like it’s an ongoing problem.

Imagine trying to get past that “ service animal” in the event of an emergency landing.

In London we look for pubs and other eating places that are dog friendly for our friends there. I am not thinking anything other than a service dog for a sight impaired passenger should be out of bounds.

A great idea. The Court dogs are particular useful for children and any traumatised people giving evidence. . The dog usually just sits at their feet. The dog is very highly trained and at the moment there are very few of them.

It’s interesting. We did work in a serviced office where dogs were brought in by others. My husband is allergic to dogs and he gets asthma. Can’t breathe. Meh, who cares. Yet the peanut allergy has resulted in all sorts of restrictions in public kitchens etc etc. I guess one allergy is less important to others but the result is the same.

It does raise an interesting question on how to exit in an emergency when you have an animal with you, or in front of you.

American Airlines and Southwest have set policies re safety issues for staff and passengers covering both service animals and emotional support animals ...after an air hostess required 5 stitches to a wound when she was bitten by a dog.

Certain animls are now allowed on board with documentation but others not Dogs, cats and tiny ponies IN... ferrets, peacocks, fish OUT.

the Brits are dog crazy and at first it was disconcerting to see a dog sat up at the next table, now I don’t mind ..well as long as there are not more animals than humans in a cafe. Thinking of the in thing now ...cat cafes.

Cove... if you are a South of the River guy from Perth, you know what having a coffee on the Capucchino Strip in Freo is like any weekend ... Dogs to the left of me ..dogs to the right of me - but at least they are in an outside area.

My objection would be about having a large sized animal in a confined space like a plane.. hygiene, comfort and safety issues.

Insane, my mate is a Delta pllot he just shakes his head and said "i have to let a [animal] on MY airplane.

I can see that all this probably started because someone said 'if they can bring a dog, and I cant, thats discrimination". Frankly I donteven know how a blind guy can navigate an airport with his seeing eye dog anyway. All the animals should be in the hold - problem fixed.
