Emirates Skyward Program new rules

Is anyone else having problems with the new rules governing Emirates Skywards program? I recently forfeited a small portion of a return ticket middle East OZ Middle East and have now been told that I don't get the miles for the flight i actually took from melbourne to Dubai! The bulk of the miles. I don't get them because i did not complete the segment! Is this the way other programs operate? Is there anything I can do?
