I am QF WP. Have been for 10 of last 11 years. I flew EK recently for the first time from BKK to DXB. My prompting to fly EK was the new EK and QF deal. I was flying under an EK number so only getting a fraction of the miles I would if it was a QF code share number but preferred that to opening a new Skywards account as I dont think I will be flying EK that often.

I was looking forward to the EK product as I had heard much praise from other flyers. I was also looking forward to seeing how they would treat a top tier QF flier. I was stunned to see how shamelessly they tried to poach me from QF and win me over to the EK program. It started at check in. Without a hesitation or moment of reflection the checkin agent upgraded me to first class. "We hope you enjoy the Emirates experience" the agent said, handing over the boarding pass. On the plane, efforts increased. This is the exchange with the first class stewardess.

"Mr Hughes, welcome aboard. Let me show you to your seat"

"Thank you", I said

"Is this your first time flying Emirates?"

"Yes I said, I am here because of your new deal with Qantas"

pause

"Have you heard of our Skywards program?" as she pulls out brochure and hands it to me. Within one minute of being on the plane I had in my hads a class of Dom Perignon and a Skywards application form

On two other occasions during the flight she mentioned the program.

While serving me caviar she mentioned that a return first class ticket would see me a long way to Gold on Skywards. As the plane was wrapping up and getting ready to descend she came back to check if I had filled in the brochure to get a Skywards membership.

The flight back also saw me upgraded to first. I slept that flight so did not see if the attendant was looking to shill me on the program.

The conspiracy theorist in me sees this as a deliberate effort by EK to target top QF flyers. If true, QF is playing a dangerous game of exposing their top flyers to an airline hungry to gobble them up.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Doesn't surprise me at all!

EK management is top notch vs QF on the contrary!

I would also be surprised if they weren't trying to poach high value FFers of any colour or alliance. Not sure exactly if the persistence you saw was company endorsed poaching, or simply good service that anyone would expect when flying F class, but you would know that more than me as I'm sure that you fly lots more F & J class on different carriers than I do.....

Perhaps FA's on EK get some sort of cash bonus for every new Skywards member they sign up on board.

What a horrible experience you endured. An airline upgrading you on both legs and telling you about the benefits of their FF program. And such a tiny, badly run airline that's on the verge of failure - how risky.

I would get in contact with the ACCC and also begin legal proceedings regarding the pain and suffering you must have experienced. Remember to keep the therapy receipts so you can claim them back.

Maybe we need a sarcastic content indicator ;)

Good on Emirates. Enjoy the competition for your patronage. I just wish it would filter down to the people who don't fly as frequently like me :)

Is the OP seriously complaining?!?!?! Poor QF FF who are so used to bad service that they can't recognize good ones! Sad! If the OP is so object to EK's approach, he/she should decline the upgrade right away when offered. Other airlines also do the same for QF FFs. CX is another one. I suspect, like CX, EK will only treat you well for a couple of times. If you don't shift then they will not approach you with baits again.

Every time someone from QF invites me to ask them about Emirates I always pose the question: "Aren't you worried that premium frequent flyers will realise EK is amazing and switch over?".

I'm yet to have an anything but flawless experience with Emirates.

Kudos to Emirates, well played. If only QF tried this more and more with their own PAX who are not members of QFF.

I think if you re-read my post you will see that I am not complaining. In fact the product and experience was amazing. Rather I am highlighting a possible area of tension between QF and EK if it is true that EK has a program/plan to target QF flyers for "conversion"

I'm willing to undergo this poaching attempt, is there a place i can sign up for them to attempt to win my business in their First Class?? :)

I don't think anyone (incl EK and QF) considers the airlines to be equal. I bet QF will put up with this and all sorts of other inequalities in order to have EK let them play along.

Count me in too!
QF deserves to have their pax all poached. Can't be that difficult. QF is only an airline of the eastern states of Aust. For us in WA and SA we should seriously start to shift FF program. If someone offers to upgrade me in that process hurray!

Qantas should learn from this. After reading some discussions on here about WPs who have stopped flying Qantas and never heard anything, just left to drift back down to SG, then PS, it's clear they need to address their business development & retention initiatives.

I would have thought that the idea of poaching is a risk each airline would have identified. I guess they just accept the risk, rather than do anything to mitigate it.

Maybe QF could poach some EK cabin staff along with any wet leased 777s??? I imagine there is less of a threat in the other direction...
