Emirates scraps fuel surcharge on tickets

“In line with the recent decrease in fuel prices Emirates has removed its fuel surcharge on all tickets," the airline's president Tim Clark said today.

"The removal ... reflects our long standing commitment to our customers ... that we would eliminate the surcharge as soon as it was commercially viable and this has now been done,” Mr Clark said.

Interesting news from Emirates... Especially since Virgin Australia and Qantas have been increasing surcharges of late....

Probably helps they’re a lot closer to where the oil is than QF/VA ;)

Does it all come here on ships, or is it flown?

Interesting that the surcharge only lasted 3 weeks, as it was only introduced on April 18. And unlike most other airlines it wasn't implemented on award flights. Don't know what to make of it all, but it is good PR for the airline to remove it.

Emirates only had a small surcharge. As for the price of jet fuel, it had a fall of more than 10% on Friday.

..............I take a lot of these award flights and I must admit the lack of a fuel surcharge was a significant cost-saving.

I wonder if that means they will reimpose it if (When) the price goes up again....(As it inevitably will)

That was indicated in the travel agents notification I received, that if the fuel prices rise again they may reintroduce it.

They also announce a profit of 1.6 billion today-pretty impressive.
Sheik Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the head of the Dubai-based group which also includes a cargo unit and other services, said net profit in the year to the end of March rose to $1.6 billion, up just shy of a 43 percent increase.
He told reporters that rising fuel costs reduced the year-end figures, with the airline paying at least $200 million in the past four months in higher fuel charges

With 156 aircraft worth USD $50 billion on order, they will need every cent of their $1.6 billion profit

Incredibly, IMHO their profit should actually be much more than this.
If you look at this link, Emirates group reports 43 percent profit rise - Yahoo! News you'll see that the profit is actually 5.9 Billion UAE Dirhams.
I bet right now the UAE Government is reconsidering their policy of tying the Dirham directly to the USD (at 3.67 : 1).

So why haven't QF and VA reversed their recent fuel surcharge increases?

It hurts them when the price goes up but screw you when the price comes down! Christmas bonuses must be looking good for the QF executives....
