Emirates order 32 A380s

Emirates has ordered a further 32 A380s that will enable it to grab market share and cut long-haul fares by up to half. This order will take Emirates total A380 order to 90 units.
The purchase will hurt British and European Airlines, particularly in F & J class, due to Emirates already 20 to fifty percent cheaper fares, and increased seating through their Dubai hub to Asia/Pacific, and Europe.

Interesting news, first new order for a year or so for the A380, their orders account for just under half the total orders !

It could do, if they build enough gates to park at. Too many of them flying around and there might be issues parking, loading and unloading, though I guess deliveries wont happen for a while.

No problem with gates, I suspect when they take over the Qantas slots - although by then I suppose they'll have repainted the Qantas A380s into Jetstar livery.

A little off topic, but is it quicker to fly with Emirates from MEL - JFK via DXB or is it quicker on QF via LAX? I know that the Pacific route is shorter in distance but as both are one stop flights, how do the connections compare?

Expert Flyer returns the following on a random date next month:

EK407 MEL 06/07/10 9:30 PM DXB 07/07/10 5:45 AM 345

EK201 DXB 07/07/10 8:30 AM JFK 07/07/10 2:15 PM 77W

That's 14:15 with a 2:45 transit and another 13:45 for a total of 30:45.

Via LAX on QF:

Time is 14:20, 90 minute transit and 5:25 for a total of 21:15.

Expert Flyer returns the following on a random date next month .. .. That's 14:15 with a 2:45 transit and another 13:45 for a total of 30:45.... Via LAX on QF ....total of 21:15.

Even if they were the same distance EK was MEL-DXB-JFK always going to take longer as it is westbound! And of course the distance is longer via DXB that compounds it. Even in the other direction JFK-DXB-MEL is 12:45 + 2:05 + 13:20 = 28:05. JFK-LAX-MEL 23:00 hrs, so still five hours longer on EK.
