Courtesy of the Shangri-La Jade offer, I now have EK Gold until the end of the year. Hence I have a HKG-BKK return in J coming up to try out EK A380 J, which I booked to trigger the status match.

I flew this flight once before in Y as part of HKG-BKK-DXB and it was completely full. Hopefully I am a chance of an op-up to F if pax numbers are high (I suspect HKG is not heavy with EK elites, being a city where CX dominates the corporate accounts).

Aside from status, is there anything else I can do to influence the upgrade fairy - e.g. BN close to 1 like with CX?

P.S. Recommended J seat on the A380?

You might be lucky but IME, EK do not upgrade their elites anywhere as much as QF elites flying on EK metal. As EK WP we asked about op ups from J to F and were firmly and not particularly politely told " oh no we don't do that." We had to use EK points. Flying as QF WP, we've been upgraded and seen many others upgraded as well.

Best of luck!

Normally we fly in F but on rare occasions when we are stuck in "steerage", I like the window seats in the small back section just in front of the bar area. 23-25A/K. In F, window suites 2-4 are wider than row 1 with extra window and extra space on the side behind the pop up bar, so IMHO 2A/K is better than 1A/K with slightly wider suite area than the middle suites which are all the same.

Agree re Qantas elite op-ups. It was mentioned that perhaps we might like to join Emirates on one flight.

I am thinking of doing HKG-BKK and return in economy with Emirates. Are these flights generally full in economy? I have only ever done business.

The selling point is the EK airfare is only ~AUD270 return compared to UL airfare of ~AUD450 earning 540 QFF points and 30SCs.

Interesting - so they treat QF elites better than their own!
Yes it seems so. EK WP is effectively QF WP1 and one gets absolutely no special treatment, not even recognition by the CSMs, let all be op-ups., let alone upgrades or seats released or even priority upgrades. Not impressed actually.

But I like flying EK, especially out of BNE there's little choice, even if code share on QF.

I recently flew SYD to BKK, was booked in J and am EK Gold. I upgraded on line to F for 39,000 points and was the only passanger in F. It was an amazing experience, 3 flight attendants looking after you, two bathrooms to use, one seat for eating, another for sleeping. It was as close to as being on a private jet as I will ever get to.
I have never been lucky enough to get an op-up from Emirates. Shortly, I am flying BKK-DXB-ZRH, so will keep my fingers crossed.

Well that was Karma! Received my first op up with EK from J to F yesterday, which was very enjoyable. The bathrooms in F on the A380 are enormous. Thank you EK.
