Big news in Cairns Post today Emirates are recruiting in Cairns Tuesday March 12th 2019 fuelling speculation that has been on the boil for some time. Maybe they will do two Aussie cities like CX do with their HKG/BNE/CNS/HKG flights, or is it from NZ only time will tell.

The new developer on the Cairns scene is Crystalbrook Collection founder Ghassan Aboud, who has a $500 million investment portfolio in Cairns, and his brilliant new 5 star Riley Hotel the first of many is open and its awesome (have stayed there twice), Mr Aboud has suggested Emirates into CNS, maybe he knows more than we do?.

Send both idle A380s up from BNE and MEL...

Yes thats what the thinking is, holiday or business in a capital then vacation in Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef etc. or vice versa. Qantas did USA HNL? via CNS eons ago but looks like they've missed the boat here, they also gave up the lucrative CNS/HKG route and CX have been laughing all the way to the bank ever since with full flights. The airport can handle so much more, however, the International Airport arrivals and departures building and member lounge both need a make over, all very tired unlike the domestic they keep pouring M$ into.

Hong Kong Airlines pulled out of CNS (and OOL) recently though...

Yep and CX flights were full before and still full after they departed. Its predicted Emirates may do an Aussie city hop and that makes a difference. I still think Qantas are missing out on CNS but they would know better about yields than I!.

How close is EK to maxing out their AU air service allowance?
Adding flights to non limited ports like CBR or CNS is an easy way for an airline to get more flights without trying to get treaties changed.

Do you know if the AU air service allowance is flight or seat numbers based?. Because they’ve reduced a number of the latter when they replaced A380’s with 777.

The UAE/AU agreement is flight based, which the UAE has split between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah to assign to their own carriers.
Can't get into see what the actual numbers are at the moment as the IASC capacity link is broken, but IIRC it is 168/week per nation.

Rumours are that CX may buy a piece of HK Airlines FYI in light of their pending insolvency...
