For those who refuse to let go of passport under all circumstances, how do you get on in countries where accommodation providers are required to register your passport with local police? Eg France.

Do you wait to check in until they do them all late at night? (I'm sure the hotel wont take too kindly to checking someone in without at least a copy of the passport.)

having spent quite a few hotel nights in france between 2001/2003 (90+), i've only ever given up my passport for just photocopy purpose and its always returned to me within a min or 2, including car rental!

don't think i would ever walk away from the check-in desk if i had to give up the passport for any great length of time

Run into this issue mainly in Italy (although elsewhere also)

They say that they must keep my passport, I say no

They ask if they can photocopy the first page of my passport I say yes

We all go to the office and make a copy

End of problem
How about carrying a few photocopies with you and just hand one over. Let them examine the passport to ensure the copy is accurate. Save them the hassle of copying and dragging you along for the ride.

That seems to be the most sensible path, and something I'll be doing in future.

I did not know there are 2 Louis Tavern - learn something every day :) . The landside one makes more sense, given lack of english spoken and passports taken (the simplest explanation is to enable the passengers to be fast-tracked in and out of Thailand). If she had refused to hand over passport then EK could possibly refuse to offer accommodation.
We both learned about the other Louis Tavern in BKK. :)

The landside Louis Tavern does makes more sense economically US$39/night as opposed to the airside Louis Tavern at US$80+/night.

Interesting, some websites with feedback of experiences with Emirates! I think I will give them a miss just in case I was ever tempted to fly with them.

Emirates attracts the same sort of mixed bag of reviews as most international airlines. The page from airlinequality.com reflects the good and bad experiences -- I wouldn't draw a conclusion that EK is a bad choice (and I know a fair few satisfied customers).
You are right there are both good and bad reviews about EK in those websites. And I am sure if you asked people here on AFF about flying experiences with any airline you will probably get mixed reviews for any given airline.

My concern with EK stems from the fact that they don't seem to be able to react in the desired manner when in pressure situations like the one described in the OP. And I think from reading some of those reviews I get the same feeling of deja vu. They are probably very good when everything goes smoothly but so are a lot of other airlines.

I don't like BA but I admire their professionalism as I was waiting in the cattle queue once in BKK for BA flight to SYD (both QF and BA queue) and a BA rep came around asking who was on the BA flight. I was advised that the flight was 3 hours late due to baggage problems at LHR, he apologised and gave me a voucher for dinner at the restaurant upstairs. I would guess QF would do the same.
