Never thought this would happen, but it has

Some backpedaling going on it seems. Definitely saw the worldwide cancelation a few hours ago, but ~30 mins ago they updated their notice:

Having received requests from governments and customers to support the repatriation of travellers, Emirates will continue to operate flights to the following countries until further notice, as long as borders remain open, and there is demand: the UK, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Australia, South Africa, USA, and Canada.

My sisters been helping a couple of Germans (god-child & bf) flew out and French lass currently stuck in Perth to get home .... I flicked this onto her

And will continue paying all staff at 100%, 75% or 50% of salary - unlike Qantas
Easier to look like the good guy when your parent supplies a huge amount of world oil, that even at the lows it is selling for now is still turning a profit and thus you can afford to pay staff. That's not even considering all the subsidies they've had for years on loss making routes as they've ramped up competition against carriers who can't compete against their black hole financing.

I concede, it would be lovely if Qantas (and others) could continue paying all staff at full rate while not flying for the next 3-6 months, but I'm almost 100% sure they wouldn't make it to their 100th birthday under such a scenario and you have to consider what 3-6 months of salary is worth if the next few years has zero salary because the whole company went belly up.

But I digress.

I have no problem with the sentiment that I think you're trying to make (which is to label Emirates as a state supported airline) but it would be good if you could check the facts you're purporting to be true.

World oil production is around 80m bpd. Dubai (the emirate) has production of perhaps 60,000 bpd.

That's not even remotely close to 'huge amount of world oil' unless you think 0.075% of world production is 'huge'.

Yes, Emirates is run as a government owned corporation but many many airlines are subsidised in some way by their governments (with Australian carriers being no exception except perhaps in how small the subsidy might be in comparison).

I don't think Emirates are doing this to look like 'a good guy' as I think of them as any other corporation. They do things for only two reasons:

1) Because there's a commercial reason to do so (i.e profit)
2) Because they do as they have been instructed (i.e they follow orders)

Since 6 April, Emirates has resumed operating limited passenger flights to carry travellers outbound from the UAE to some destinations.
