Scams like these

I won't touch booking.com. There are too many stories exactly like yours that suggest to me that their systems are, or have been, compromised in some way, and have become a scammers paradise. Book direct with the provider is my advice.
Stopped using them around end of the '90s 2010s when I read too many alarming stories on social media . I use hotels . com now and get the one free night in ten plus price match guarantee.

I didn't even know they were around back then. The first ones I remember were lastminute and Wotif and that might have been early 2000s? It's all such a blur now. Having been on the web almost since the beginning I have to wonder at the changes.

You are right. I should have typed late 2010s. Just before covid when I stopped using. Corrected

The kernel of the company is 30yo but worldwide prominence was a few years later when they adopted .com suffix.

On the weekend I received a WhatsApp message telling me that I needed to reconfirm a booking we have up at Maggie later in the year. This was booked through booking.com. The message had every detail and without thinking I hit the confirm booking link. The next page got the alarm bells ringing. Select this link to pay $€317 and I thought stop and escape.

I contacted the accom on Maggie and they confirmed my suspicions that it was a scam. They said let booking.com know what I did but of course I've had nothing back from them.

A couple of days later I reduced an email saying that I hadn't responded to the WhatsApp message and that our booking would be cancelled. I just flagged it as spam. I just checked the spam folder in Gmail and there's another email
there.

Amazing, a miraculous son. Hahahaha
Yes, booking.com did get hacked.
Was talked about on here for a while, people who had confirmed bookings, and had paid, were sent messages, some from odd places, as yours, asking for more $.
Sad really, I was with booking.com for a while, got to silver status.
Will not be using them anymore.

Its gotten so bad, that the scammers know, when and where a person has booked, and you cant tell me its just by chance the scammers know it.
In your case, if they have gotten the date of your stay right, and then name of the hotel/resort right on spec, then its a very deep result that the scammers have gotten.
Bad, mate, very bad.
As you have replied to them, probably your details will now be onsold.
