Hello everyone! So, I've signed up my Westpac SQ Platinum cc, earning points madly, booked flights to Europe. Now I have about 50,000 points and have no idea how to use them. Can anyone give me a quick run down on my options, please? I can also use them with Star Alliance, I believe? Do I need to transfer them to *A or pay a joining fee? Their search facility for looking for flights doesn't seem too user-friendly. At the moment I'm mostly interested in seeing where I can go and what I can do with my points. All tips appreciated!

Explore the Krisflyer website. Yes you can use them on *A airlines but you may have to ring them to book such travel!

Is it possible to book anything other than RTW or Circle Pacific fares through the *A website? I can't even find a number to call them, it just directs me to make an online enquiry.

If you want to use your SQ miles to book travel on *A carriers, you need to contact SQ not *A.

Thanks zainman! Is there any way to find out what my kris flyer points are worth with say Air New Zealand before submitting the booking form along with my credit card details? Is there a conversion chart/information?

I am so unimpressed with SQ right now. I've spoken to two different staff members (on their 02 9... number, no less, no 13- number for them) at KrisFlyer and I wouldn't describe either of them as having a functional level of english, despite having pressed '1' for english. Seriously, I am repeating every single thing I say, 2 or 3 times. *cry*

That's quite unusual. I use the 02 9350 0203 number for the past 5 years and goes OK.

While I agree some of their customer service sucks (e.g. their website sucks and should be set on fire), this phone issue isn't something I've personally experienced before.

SQ's telephone communication has been well above par for me (remembering the fact that the 'benchmark' in this case are other airlines), whether its me calling tell to make/switch a reservation or them calling me proactively to give me an update on services or operational issues like an aircraft or minor schedule changes.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have a slightly off topic question that involves being a bit of a noob.

We are wanting to book some award flights from Brisbane to Singapore, or Brisbane to Vietnam. But the taxes are so high, is it really worth it? It comes to about $1100 in taxes for two econ tickets. Yet I can buy tickets for only a few hundred more. Is this the case for all award tickets in econ?

We are planning to book suites soon too, but obviously the taxes/outright purchase ratio is good.

What would be the best use of using approx 90,000 miles for me?

The high fees/taxes/surcharges are what make economy awards poor value. Use them to upgrade for J or F or upgrade from Y

Thanks, yeah after looking around here more it seems there's not a lot I can do... Will use them for one-way J then I guess...

This is a great thread for a newbie like me too. I'm also thinking of getting that Westpac SQ Krisflyer card or the Altitude Black. The other big question though, is how far in advance can you plan and book SQ reward flights? With QF it seems unless you book a year out, your chances get quite poor for J flights, but I've read that SQ release their flights at T-14 which is fine if you are retired but would make it impossible to plan far ahead for people who are working and need to pre-plan their leave. Is it possible to book SQ rewards flights 330 or 355 days out?
Thanks!!!

You can book well ahead of T-14 on SQ. Availability is actually very reasonable imo compared to other programs and most popular destinations offer multiple flights per day so its relatively easy to find a combination of flights that has availability.

That's great to hear, thanks mitwg. The way it is getting harder and harder with QF, we all need to diversify into other programs it seems
