We've long spoken here about how QF pull out of a particular international route and then bemoan the fact that their International Competitors are gaining ground. I see in this latest report in The Australian that once again, yields are down not because QF continue to contract routes but because those nasty competitors continue to eat away at their passengers.

But what did surprise me is the comment that yields are down because QF switched from SIN to DXB ...

The airline attributed a fall in international yields compared to the prior corresponding period to increased competition and capacity growth by international competitors as well as the changes stemming from the move of its European hub to Dubai.

Eh? Wasn't this the panacea? The last roll of the QFi dice? ... Bad reporting?

The actual words used indicated yields were down because they increased capacity to Asia after the DXB shift:

Thanks markis10, that reads far better than The Australian version.

Of course, whether one offsets all of the losses of the other QFi sectors, plus weren't the EK feeds supposed to have an uplift on QF domestic yields? I always struggled to see how that would work given the direct nature of EK into those destinations which would otherwise be fed by QFd. About the only place EK don't fly to is Tassie.

Coincidentally, Rumour File on 3AW Breakfast had QF ending Tassie flights ....

Qantas has quit tassie, last mainline flights being replaced by QFLink 717s.

I completely missed that - just reading through my googled results.

So, the 717s were announced at the end of August as operating between SYD/MEL/BNE/CBR, presumably these new Tassie services (with HBA based crews) announced in the middle of September will be additional.

Does make you wonder, though, how a 2-year deal can then be signed September 30 to increase Tasmanian visitors when you're reducing capacity ... unless these birds will be flying far more flights than the existing 737s - difficult to see how with only 15 pilots in the crew base.

Maybe Cobham will be the new Red-Q? Honestly, QF have done so many U-Turns over the last few years, they should be playing with dodgems instead of aircraft.
