$1896 Is present bid.

Not for me as its not worth the risk of getting busted let alone someone taking the money and flying away on your points.

Made me curious and cause its a long week with not much on the tv as to what people would pay for those points.

Wow. I wouldn't buy through eBay, but given that 100,000 is enough for a one way from east coast to LAX in J (plus around $400 in fuel surcharges) and you can buy AA miles for such a trip for around $1500 AUD and have no fuel surcharges, that values them at about $1100. Seems crazy to buy with the amount of risk for such a transaction (especially if QF find out) when anyone can just buy AAdvantage, US dividend miles or LIfe Miles legitimately.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

how much would a platinum member want to sell off their complimentary gold member status to a friend or family member?

Being that they can chose 50k points, thats a reasonable indicator...

Due to a competition that was run recently, Qantas Gold Membership according to the comps T&C's is worth $600 dollars

I wouldn't pay more than $1,000 but luckily I do not need to buy any QFF points.

As nlagalle mentioned you can choose 50,000 QFF points as the reward when you reach Partner Gold. Too risky to try and do a deal. What would happen if Qantas somehow finds out the transfer of points was not a family member?

Are they valuing Gold status at what Qantas lounge membership costs?

How would they? There is no way known that this would happen unless they had a reason to investigate it. Can you imagine how many family transfers their automated systems do in a year with 10M members? I wouldn't be worried at all. It's only the publication on eBay or Gumtree or something that could draw attention to oneself certainly not a private arrangement. However, the practicalities are less important than the fact that it is completely against the T&C's (fair or not--obviously unfair) and if you get caught you're both buggered.

The funny thing about points is that their marginal value increases as their collective value does at the same time.

For example, 10,000 points by itself can be sneezed at, but if you were 10,000 points short of something, then 10,000 points become much more valuable. Similarly, 100,000 points is nice, but not great by itself. However, if you had 150,000 or more points already (just saying for example, this is not accurate), 100,000 points on top of that is more valuable. Of course, many of us use this argument to similarly justify why "keeping at it" in the miles game is a good idea (provided you set your game plan from the outset).

[Aside: reminds you of the Russian joke... "What is relativity theory?" "Well, five hairs on your head is relatively few, but five hairs in your soup is relatively a lot."]

In any case, this sale is clearly against the T&Cs, so good luck to the bidder and the winner; hope they see to it they get caught (of course, eBay is likely immune in this case even though they like to assume some responsibility in eliminating items which they believe are against their rules / can't be traded legally).

That is the key point. I know it is not easy to get caught but with too much to lose it does not look as attractive.

P.S. I know Murphy quite well and not sure when he is going to turn up next for a visit.
