Earning SCs and Points on DONE4

Friends, I have noticed when planning a DONE4 that, for example, routes across a continent (eg JNB-LHR-TAV) sometimes become available. Do you get better SCs for this rather than a more direct route? Also does the great circle direct calculator for points come into play, or is it point to point to point?

Have a play with milage monkey to work out best earning routes (eg F class on AA within America provide best SC's so maximise these to the full 6 flights even if it means taking an indirect flight path).

my last DONE4 got me 1150 SC's and almost half came from Nth America
