Able to choose seats last night about 70 hours before Mel to SYD and syd to MeL flight..everything open and got 1st row in and out. Not quite SG yet either. Was surprised. Looks like an emptyish flight though. Working with a colleague I don't know too well today who happens to be on the same flight so hopefully they can choose the next seat and do some networking

Depending on your colleagues status this may not he possible. Best chance is to either ring up and link bookings now (you will need his pnr for this) or when checking in at self check-in machine press the check-in companion button which will then link to the highest status in the 2 bookings.
