Anyone tried or managed to check in at SYD more than 3 hours before the flight? I'm thinking of taking mum to the F lounge but she's catching an earlier flight than mine. Not a problem with QF as they do all-day checkin but not sure if CX allow it.

Edit: just to clarify, there are 3 CX flights on the day (mine being the third) and I'm thinking of checking-in while the counter is open for the flight before mine.

Do CX allow on-line check in? If so that might make it easier.

Also your CX/OneWorld status may come into play as will the cabin you're flying although I'm thinking you're probably a WP or equivalent.

In my experience CX generally do not have staff at the counter until 3hrs before, so even if you check in online you have to wait until the bag drop opens before you can go on through.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If I get a chance and remember, I'll go over to the the terminal tomorrow and ask the staff what is possible. Will report back if I learn anything useful.

I could do online check in 24 hours beforehand but no guarantee they'll hand me the boarding pass anyway. Also, even though I'm a QF WP I prefer to flash my MarcoPolo Gold at check in as they are quite generous with their own elite customers sometime.

I spoke with the CX Service Manager at the Service Desk. Which flights are you on? There are four flights a day: early morning, mid-morning, afternoon and night time.

The manager indicated that, for example if you were trying to check-in for the night time flight in the morning, that would not be possible. It seems the main issue is that the Ground Handling Agent for CX doesn't like getting bags for later flights as they then have to have a make-up area for that flight, which may not be possible given how busy it can get in the baggage handling area. (Slight chance the bag may get misplaced as well).

However, while it is not ideal, they did admit that it may be possible to drop bags for the afternoon (3:40pm) flight during the check-in time for the 11:30am flight.

Check-in counters are not staffed at all times. E.g. After check-in for the 11:30am flight, they close down and then re-open again 3 hours prior to the 3:40pm flight.

Doesn't sound like there's any guarantees, but you may get away with it, and maybe even more so if you are OWE. As a suggestion, perhaps if you can't convince them to let you drop your bags off, and you have to end up hanging around landside until you can, then perhaps you could convince them to give your Mum an entry pass to the Lounge.

This is exactly what I'm planning to do. So it seems that I may have a small chance. Thanks for reporting back!

How did you go TKK?
FYI: NOV last year, I had no issue with CX SYD checked me (with a bag) in the morning for night time departure. (Arrived from AKL, flown J and MPC GO)

note: I poped to CBD for lunch and dinner after dropping the bag. The agent did ask for my mobile number and said would call me to ensure that I have returned back to the airprt.

So is the general view that for the late flight (ie CX138) the check-in and bag drop opens promptly 3 hours before, or is it more like 3.5 hours before?

I want to get to the lounge 3 hour prior if possible, but don't want to hang around land side for ages with nothing to do.

My experience has been 3hrs before and no earlier for CX, so keen to see how you fare.

Got there at t-3 hours and 10 minutes and straight though both counter and security within 10 mins
