I am in desperate need of an explanation.
I recently subscribed to Expert Flyer and was checking the seat map for a flight I am booked on this Sunday – QF 97 BNE to HKG. I am flying with my partner and two children and have requested upgrades for all of us, from Y to J, and I have WP status.
Presently, the map for J is showing 4 seats as available and 14 as blocked. Does this mean that, in total, there are 18 available seats? Or does it mean that there are only 4 seats available, with the other 14 reserved for platinum members who have purchased a ticket, but not yet chosen a seat?
So, when purchasing a ticket, does the system automatically allocate a seat, which will then show on E/F, or does nothing show on E/F until the seat has been chosen?
Sorry about all the questions, and thank-you. Any ideas as to the likelihood of an upgrade will be most welcome as well J

Looking at the seat map there are 30 Skybeds:
  • 14 are showing as "Q-Blocked", but not allocated:

  • 4 are showing as simply unallocated:
    free-seat.gif
  • 12 are showing as allocated:
    occupied-seat.gif
This does indeed mean there are 18 unallocated seats.

However, seat maps are not always a good guide. Loadings give a better indication. E/F shows this flight is "Wide Open" with available booking in most classes.

I would say your upgrade chances are reasonable since you are a WP.
