In 'My Booking' I can see an offer for an upgrade from Discount Economy to Business , but I currently only have 14,000 when I need 16,000

Can I use top-up points for this kind of upgrade?

I have a feeling that the percent rule will prevent you from buying enough but have a go as a dummy - it will tell you.

Also, transfer some points from your credit card. Whatever you do, request the upgrade quickly as it will disappear, sometimes within minutes of appearing!

I doubt you'll have any trouble purchasing 2K points online as long as your CC is sound for the A$77.50.

Note, the

Upgrade gets offered on the "Your Bookings" page irrespective of any segments of the booking being eligible or not or any availability. It's only when you go to do so by clicking the "Request Upgrade" button that you'll get knocked back if it not eligible or there's not upgrade availability (for domestic flights).

Domestically, If a segment is eligible for upgrading, you can pre-check availability by doing a dummy award booking and looking for Business class award availability on the same flight.
