Hi Guys,

What is domestic D class on QF?

Does this have any relation to the availability of on departure upgrades?

Im flying out of perth tomorrow and looking at which flight I have the best chance of upgrading through points at the QClub. (QC Silv)

Domestically, D class has two purposes.

1). Some routes sell D class seats as a discount Business class fare. This is mainly on the East coast for shorter routes like BNE-SYD or MEL-SYD etc.

2) You have probably heard about DOnex's from reading this site. They are booked into D class, and also use the same bucket.

Nothing directly to do with the chances of upgrade. However, it means that Business hasn't sold as well as Qantas had hoped, thus there is a higher chance of upgrade availability.

I note QF 802 has U1. This means if you are quick enough and the availability remains, you can upgrade right now into business through the "upgrade using points" link on the Qantas website (assuming you have an eligible fare in the correct booking class as per the terms and conditions)

Mal I think that the U class is used for awards only. Uprgrades are now based on QF's discretion on how full the J cabin is etc.

My understanding and experience is domestic flights still use U Class for upgrades up to 24 hours before the flights.

I'm not sure how ODU's at the QP are arranged fare bucket wise.

Any recent experience or information about changes to how domestic upgrades occur?

ODU's at domestic lounges use any available J class seat, regardless of U, D or I availability. They do take into account things like on-duty staff travel though. A seat may be available for sale (for $$$$) but not for an ODU.

ODU's on domestic sectors of international flights require U class availability, and this rarely exists in the timeframe for an ODU.

I concur with Mal; If U class exists on a domestic Qantas flight and you are booked in a qualifying WHY class on the same flight you should be able to upgrade with points there and then!

D class can be quite a bit cheaper than J if available. It actually shows up as the 'Business' price when available on the QF web site.

Mal is 100% correct.
If there is a U class seat available, a domestic upgrade can be confirmed immediately.

D is also needed for domestic add-on to international paid business itinerary in D class (ie not just DONEx's).
