Domestic Leg on International flight

Okay I know I was a bit daft in this story but interested in what others may know of correct practices.
I was booked to go from Brisbane to Darwin on QF505 to Syd, then QF123 to Darwin via Int. Airport. When I checked in at BNE I presented only my QC card and I was given 2 boarding passes for the 2 legs of the journey. I was not asked for photo ID nor was the QF123 boarding pass given a D sticker.
At SYD INT. I fronted at the Domestic queue at immigration and was told to go back to the service desk and get a sticker. There I was asked for ID and I then discovered I didnt have my license with me. I was then off loaded and had to rebook another flt. 12 hours later. Yes It was noted on the E-ticket to have photo ID BUT should I have been asked at the BNE DOM check-In? Had they asked then, I would have had time for family to bring it out to the Airport

I was not asked for photo ID nor was the QF123 boarding pass given a D sticker.

The photo ID is not a requirement for check-in. It is a requirement for going through immigration processing for a domestic flight. However, it would have been nice if the check-in agent did confirm that you had it with you as you would need it in SYD. And of course they should have included the D sticker.

Would you believe I took it out of my wallet the sunday before and put it in the console of other car, to drive a whole 5km from home to Brisbane Gateway Bridge at 5am to go in the Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run!!:shock:

I haven't been able to check in for a domestic flight in the last 3 years at least WITHOUT showing my drivers licence for ID - they always ask for ID and the licence is the easiest thing to show.

There is another thread here somewhere discussing people's experiences with ID requirements when checking in on domestic flights.

Has been about 2 years since I was last asked to produce photo ID. It seems now that they seem content with a FF card.

I always carry my license anyway as I am usually hiring a car at my destination.

I once arrived at BNE not realising that my drivers license had expired (problem with these 10 year licenses) - Thrifty wouldn't give me the hire car (understandably) so burnt about $300 in taxi fares for an overnight trip....

Even when I have done OLCI and just gone to drop my bags at bag drop I have been asked for ID before they will accept my baggage... I don't think I look that suspect

If it is you, then I suspect that you have a lot of friends.

For many years it has in fact been the practice that you could be asked to identify yourself at check, but this was never enforced and never done. At some stage it clicked with both AN and QF, when advance purchase return tickets were the cheapest way of travelling and they were non-refundable, that some nasty unkind individuals were (horrors!) actually buying 21 day APEXES and using them as one way tickets and selling the return halves or trading them or giving them away. At the same time the air safety people in both Government and the airlines started pointing out that in the event of a major disaster the manifest would bear no relationship to the actual PAX load and it would be impossible to identify many of the victims. It was than declared to be policy that ALL domestic passengers had to produce identification at check in. Evidently this may have been relaxed a little. - but note -

A friend of mine who collects autographs and similar used to make regular return trips SYD-MEL to visit his family with the names of well known movie stars on the tickets so that he could keep the passenger copy as a "souvenir"! (PAX: HANKS/THOMASMR)

Well, there you go. Recent OLCI's without bags - I've not been asked for ID.
Other than the infamous International Flight; I checked bags BNE-SYD-DWN-BNE on just my Qantas Club card!!

Thinking back, it's been years since I had check-in luggage on Domestic flight (that 2 x 7Kg is plenty).

OLCI, print BP, front up at gate ...

I have only been asked for photo ID once. This was when I had OLCI'ed in but wanted a "real" BP so I didn't print it out. The QF CSA said she just need to verify beyond my FF card as I was dealing direct with her. Fair enough I guess.

The leg was a "red-e fare" at about $400ish. They "generously" applied this to a full econo. at an extra cost of $605. !!!
Oh well at least it earnt more FF points ( and SC I didnt need)

Doing a bit of domestic flying in the US recently, I picked up the 'trick' of always taking your passport. Now I do that domestically here too and you simply can't go wrong.
