Hi, road warriors! :)

Gathering some statistic for a uni case study and interested to compile stats about domestic J load factors, intra-day and day-of-the-week. So if you a regular flyer (or even an occasional one but have flown recently), could you please comment your observations regarding:
1. The route (eg SYD-MEL) + approx. time of the day or a flight number (whichever is easier)
2. Date or day of the week
3. Approx. loading e.g. 6/12 or almost full would be enough

Qualitative answers are great too, eg "I fly at least once a month in the evening BNE-SYD around 6pm and J is usually 8/12 full" :D

Many thanks!

Over all my QF flight in the past year, QF have not filled their J seats with op-ups, ie a lot of the times there were empty seats in QFd J.

ha! you lead a charmed life then.

Btw you can not assume "op ups"

Mostly unlikely.

Late people filling up seats can be and most usually are employees on staff travel/passes, or friends on buddy passes, or cleared upgrade requests at the gate. maybe the odd op up.

While I personally wonder how a few people commenting on random routes and experiences I'll actually disagree with AP's experiences.

It's RARE in my experiences flying routes like MEL-ADL/SYD/BNE/OOL to not have J full - moreso on the trunk routes such as the SYD/MEL/BNE triangle. I've had a few exceptions though, most recently over the last weekend 11/12 in J, the free seat next to me (nice). and an OOL-SYD being 3/12 on a 717 (I was shocked even though it is a leisure route).

It's easy to tell those on pass travel since they do not get first choice of meal options during service, but that also can apply to gate upgrades or standby pax with the infamous CNA message.

I would also note just anout all widebody (ie: 330) flights on SYD-MEL I have been on in recent times have gone out full up front.

My totally anecdotal comments.

I'll agree with Richard - on BNE/SYD/MEL QF flights, it's rare to see any empty J seats except for late night flights (after 2000).

Depending on the purpose of the OP's case study, I doubt if data collected via AFF would be reliable, partly for reasons already mentioned (i.e. not all occupied J seats are J class paid fares) and the sample size (i.e. number of segments) would be small. Hence, any conclusions drawn from AFF data would be suspect.
