Hi all,
Just a question here.
I'm looking to travel with my photo gear suitcase, gear inside is worth ~$15,000 in replacement value.
As you can imagine i don't really want to check it in but i doubt they'll let me on with it in it's case.

The case is:
Buy Pelican 1510 Carry On Case?gclid=CKDZit7QkMECFQF9vQodCKYAWw Online Australia | Gig Gear

  • External Dimensions: 55.9 x 35.1 x 22.9 cm
  • Internal Dimensions: 50.1 x 27.9 x 19.3 cm
  • Weight: 6.17kg

The case already weighs by itself 6.17KG....
Say i were to check it in and they lose it, what happens? Not so worried about them damaging it, it IS a pelican case after all.
Best bet is to get travel insurance covering $15k for both legs? Done a quick quote and that's about $550 for insurance. At this stage i'm better off driving.
Travelling from Mel-Adl return.

Technically Qantas states max 105CM bag for carry on, which mine falls well within.
I guess i could just hope they wouldn't weight it?

105cm is total dimensions, isn't it? Yours comes in at 114cm? So outside of these, and likely overweight. Low odds on them losing it, depends on your risk appetite.

I would give them a ring. They may have procedures in place for this type of situation as I'm sure you are not the first to have the problem.

Ah you are right, 105cm is total linear dimensions.
I know it's low odds, but i just don't want it to be that time i do fly and check it in, somehow it gets lost! Only ever lost a bag once during 20 years.
I also have AMEX Platinum travel insurance, but i don't think that covers too much.
I will give them a call!

With Qantas domestically, you can have 1 x 115cm bag and a 'personal item'.

Carry On Baggage Allowance | Qantas

So the single case should be ok .

FWIW, you can alternatively have 2 x 105cm and a "personal Item".

The rules are different for international travel.

Size wise it's fine apparently hah, so i'll just risk it. Worst case i'll take out two of the camera bodies and two of the lenses and carry it around my neck to beat the weight limit. :)

Low odds, but expensive. I always carry my camera bag on board and never check it. ( use a smaller pelican when needing a varity of gear)
