Hey.
My classic reward flights from Darwin to Sydney via Canberra got cancelled. Qantas has offered me an alternative via Brisbane which isn't ideal but OK. What I was wondering is whether I am eligible to get any $ back as the fees and charges I paid for in the original bookings via Canberra were significantly more than those if I had booked via Brisbane?
Also any idea if the direct Canberra - Darwin route will be reinstated? Looking through AFF and news releases it seems it has an inconsistent history
Thanks

You should be able to get a refund of taxes if you lie more than apply to your involuntary new routing. But, you will have to call or email to make it happen. It will not happen automatically.

Following, I'm also currently due about $30 in taxes from a rerouted flight previously via CBR and now via MEL. In my case, I'm happy with the extra SCs it will incur though.

Generally speaking during a schedule change on a classic award operated by Qantas you can request any Qantas routing that day so long as there is availability in the selected cabin (I.e. there doesn’t need to be classic award availability). See if this is the best option they have

Thanks for the suggestions.

When I first called up the Qantas rep offered me flights via Brisbane with only 2 options, either a 35min layover or a 3.5hr layover. I decided to hold back and call another day. Later that week I got a very helpful Qantas rep on the phone who gave me many more options for flights. She told me I was entitled to a refund or credit for difference in taxes but I would need to apply online using the Customer Feedback form. I did this and just received a reply today. Basically saying that Qantas will not refund me but here, have 3,000 frequent flyer points. I've included a pic of the full email.

It would've been nice to get the refund especially as the Qantas rep on the phone said I could however not the end of the world. Definitely not worth a travel insurance claim as they have suggested.

Funnily enough about a week ago they also changed my flights to Darwin and even the rescheduled flight from Darwin to Brisbane. Lots of reshuffling of timetables and aircraft going on!
