Hi All,

Just wondering when flying MEL - PER and then on to SIN where I will need to check-in. I assume it will be the domestic terminal, at which my baggage etc will be checked through. Can I use the QP line?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm sure a number of people have used the early check-in service at SIN - does this mean I can get rid of baggage and have my seat secured 24hrs in advance, or they'll just give me some sh**ty priority check-in ticket?

You will need to check in at MEL domestic, however you cannot use the normal QP check in.

At MEL there is a separate check in section for passengers with international connections and , iirc, there is no separate queue there for QP. On the plus side however, the International Connections check in seems to normally not have much of a queue anyway

You can get a seat selected now by phoning QF and requesting one, but early check in will give you a boarding pass and allow you to dump your luggage off

For my last trip to China I flew a domestic sector MEL-SYD and then transferred to QF127 SYD-HKG. I lined up in the international connections queue at MEL behind about 20 other people and was debating just going to the Business check-in counter as there was no queue.

In the end I was checked in at the business counter as they were calling people forward due to impending departure of the flight to SYD. They even issued my nice blue J BP for SYD-HKG. So is it strictly necessary to use the international connections check-in?

Its my understanding that you can use the regular Business Class, Qantas Club, FF queues for domestic check-in for international flights. However, in many cases it can be quicker to use the International Connections desk.

Thanks. Next time I will go wherever queues are shortest. Unfortunately for my last flight, this wasn't the international connections and there weren't many people using the business check-in at 6am on a Sunday morning.

At SYD , I have seen someone checking in for an International connection turned away and sent to the international connections desk

Another good reason to avoid SYD :p . in BNE, the International queue and the Business Class queue are adjacent.

Anyone know what the 'early check-in' at Changi is like? Is it an official QF service or just something run by the airport? I guess what I'm trying to ask here is, is it reliable and will it give me some chance of securing a good seat?

Not if you have an international connection and want baggage checked through to destination. In SYD T3 I have always been asked to go to International Connections desk, check in row 25/26 I think. Never more than 2-3 people in the queue.

I have - on multiple occasions with multiple international carriers - checked in at the normal buiness class line and at the International transfers line in Melbourne (depending on which is shorter) - on all occasions, my luggage has been checked through to my final destination. On some flights, I have needed to get a boarding pass for the international leg on arriving in Sydney (particularly when flying on the QF/OZ codeshae to ICN), but my luggage was still checked all the way through... I have transited through SYD for ICN, HKG, WLG, AKL and NRT flights, and checked luggage from MEL has never been an issue from either checkin counter in MEL.

It seems it may be different at different airports. In Brisbane, the "international connections" desk is adjacent to the FF queue and they often share agents when one line is busy and the other empty. That is the only place I have experience with domestic check-in for international flight.

From what people have posted here, it can;t be done at SYD or MEL.

Recently i did MEL-SYD-ZQN and at 5am on a sunday morning econ check-in was overflowing, intl connections pretty long too so i just took my chances with the QC checkin as at least i could see the front of the queue. I thought we might be told to go to the other queues but the agent had no problem checking our bags through to destination and giving us both BP's. others have obviously had different experiences.

It seems the only thing consistent about this is the inconsistency.

No wonder! Qantas can't even give me a straight answer, and despite advertising the 24hr Check-in at SIN on their Airport Guide, the 3 QFF Service Centre phone operators I have spoken with had never even heard of this service!

The info is on the Changi site Early Check-in

Thanks Dave.

That the phone operators couldn't provide me with any info about it however, suggests that it may not be an "official" Qantas service, which has me slightly concerned.

I would love to be able to check in 24hrs prior to the flight, as it would mean I get to choose seats (as much as is possible with low status and QP mem.) before everyone else in SYD (QF5). I just don't want to be stuck with being shunted up the back of the plane because of a breakdown in communication between the Airport Service and QF's computer systems...they happen more often than not!
