Bit of a weird one - I've always thought it would be interesting/fun to take a domestic flight to a port and then return on the same aircraft. This is easier to plan in advance with the non-737 aircraft as they're less common.

I've been looking at SYD-MEL which does a 1830- 2005 on an A321N. There's then a 2100 departure from MEL-SYD that's an A321N, so I would imagine it's the same plane.

Trouble is it's below MCT so it can't be booked on one PNR.

Is this a bit risky to consider? One would imagine a delay then delay the next flight anyway, but a cancellation might put things out.

Or just pick a port where the aircraft flies back shortly after which is basically anywhere in QLD other than BNE and the last flight of the day.

Two separate booking would be needed. But this is the rotation of that aircraft currently. All SYD based crew wanting to go home on that flight.

Nothing is guaranteed. I recently had a connection BNE-MEL-HBA which I worked out used the same aircraft. BNE-MEL was late, just before landing in MEL QF reassigned MEL-HBA to a different aircraft and I missed it.

It’s not uncommon for status runners to do exactly that.

I’ve only ever done it once during the heady days of JASA with a DSC on a CBR-SYD-ADL (return on one booking) with the SYD-ADL-SYD on the same aircraft and same crew. I was already in CBR, so had the repositioning in place and the final flight home but work got in the way and I exited the process on arrival in SYD from ADL.

I was actually able to defer the final leg SYD-CBR for a later date.

I’d be more worried about any delay and Sydney curfew with this one. Seems like it’s only had a few cancellations in the prior months. If they change your flight times on different PNRs last minute that could get you into trouble.

Aircraft swaps are another issue, although I see it will be the same crew. That’s an issue I’ve had with Jetstar recently, inbound to Melbourne on an aircraft operated by a non Melbourne crew/aircraft, engineering want the aircraft so a changeover occurs during the turnaround that always adds another 30 mins so we always leave late on the outbound.
