Hi All - thought I would once again call upon the astounding font of knowledge in this forum!

I have a trip coming up syd-drw. I noticed that some of the legs i can take from Syd are listed as 'Int'. I know this means going from the Intl airport, but wondering if there are any drawbacks / benefits to be had? Can I sneak some duty free through?

Someone mentioned that you have to wear a pointy hat with a large D on it but I think there were joking.

I should know the answer as I was on QF374 (JL777) BNE-SYD yesterday morning but preceded by international flight.

You get an orange "D" sticker on your boarding pass.

Normally when purchasing duty free they ask to see boarding pass, and the orange "D" sticker is a dead giveaway, but other times they just ask for the flight number so you may be able to purchase duty free. I don't think it is recommended trying to sneak duty free as the penalties may be severe if caught.

At a few of the counters at the Sydney Downtown Duty-Free they have boarding pass readers which scan your bp before your purchase (so obviously you won't be allowed to buy anything).

That said, i've heard... that if you go to the small counters in the specific section that your buying in (ie: the alcohol section, cosmetics etc) more often than not you won't need to show your bp. If they ask you can always do the old "oh i've left it with my wife" line and make a quick escape. I've heard anyway.

JohnK is right though, there would no doubt be penalties for such acts should you happen to get caught.

The SYD-DRW flight is the first leg of the SYD-BOM flight. So one advantage is that it is operated by an A330-300 aircraft so that means Skybeds in business class and AVOD IFE throughout the aircraft.

IMO, the drawbacks and advantages are:

Drawbacks:
  • Earlier Check-in time (IIRC, Dom through INT is 60 mins close vs 30 mins dom).
  • Immigration hassles (Have to go through immigration at both airports, although you get express clearance)
  • You may have to wait to get your bag x-rayed if the airport is busy, although your bag may not be x-rayed.

Advanges:
  • Sometimes better food than domestic flight as the flight may be catered for international operations rather than domestic (although quite a bit, the domestic leg gets domestic style catering).
  • Alcohol available before the normal opening time of the Dom Qantas Club.
  • Better planes normally.

Don't forget to take your (Australian) driver's license, or passport!

(And I agree with the other comments on Duty Free. Not advisable really, but perhaps possible. I think Duty/Tax Evasion (I assume that would be what it is?) wouldn't be looked upon too nicely by Customs and the ATO. )
